Google Maps Timeline

Manage your Timeline

Google Maps Timeline shows an estimate of places that you may have been and routes that you may have taken based on your Location History. You can edit your Timeline anytime and delete your Location History in Timeline. Your Timeline is private, so only you can find it. Timeline available on mobile and computer.

If you have settings like Web & App Activity turned on and you pause Location History or delete location data from Location History, you may still have location data saved in your Google Account as part of your use of other Google Sites, apps, and services. For example, location data may be saved as part of activity on Search and Google Maps when your Web and App Activity setting is on, and included in your photos, depending on your camera app settings.

Create Timeline

To create Timeline, you need to turn on your Location Services and Location History. When you turn on Location History, Timeline reflects the places that you've gone with the devices that your account is signed in on and which are reporting location. Learn more about Location History.

  1.  On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle  and then Settings Settings.
  3. Tap Personal content and scroll to “Location settings.”
  4. Under “Location settings,” check that it says “Location Services is on.” If it doesn’t, tap Location Services is not set to always and then Location and then Always.
Tip: When you turn on Location Services on your device, your iPhone or iPad shares its location with the apps that you use. Location data may be saved as part of your activity on other Google services like Google Search, when other settings are turned on, like Web & App Activity.

Find your travels

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Your Timeline Timeline.
  3. To find another day or month, tap Show calendar Event and then swipe left or right and tap a day.
Tip: You can switch between the tabs at the top of the screen, such as Places, Cities, or World, and find insights about places you visited.

Turn on or pause Location History

When you turn on Location History, Google records your location data and places in your Google Account, even when you're not using Google Maps. To turn on or pause your Location History:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, go to Timeline.
  2. Click Settings Settingsand then Enable Location History or Pause Location History.

Edit Timeline

Change the places that you've visited

If a place is wrong on Timeline, you can edit the location and when you were there.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Your Timeline Timeline.
  3. Find the wrong place on Timeline and tap it.
  4. Tap Edit place.
  5. Tap Search for a place or address, or scroll and select the right place from the list.
  6. To edit when and how long you were there, tap the time.
Tip: If Web & App Activity is turned off, you can’t edit locations or activities on Timeline, but you can delete a day or your entire Location History.
Switch between miles & kilometers
 To change how Timeline measures distance, tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Settings and then Distance units. Then choose Automatic, Kilometers, or Miles.
Find your home & work on Timeline

If you've saved your home and work addresses to Google, they show up on Timeline. In addition to Timeline, this information may also be used in other Google products and services.

Delete a day
Important: When you delete information from Timeline, it’s permanent. You won’t be able to find your Location History information on Timeline again. If you have other settings like Web & App Activity turned on and you delete Location History, you may still have location data saved in your Google Account as part of your use of other Google Sites, apps, and services. For example, location data may be saved as part of activity on Search and Maps when your Web & App Activity setting is on, and included in your photos depending on your camera app settings.
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Your Timeline Timeline.
  3. In the top right, tap Show calendar Event and then pick the day that you want to delete.
  4. Tap More and then Delete the day Delete .
Delete Location History
Important: When you delete information from Timeline, it’s permanent. You won’t be able to find your Location History information on Timeline again. If you have other settings like Web & App Activity turned on and you delete Location History, you may still have location data saved in your Google Account as part of your use of other Google Sites, apps, and services. For example, location data may be saved as part of activity on Search and Maps when your Web & App Activity setting is on, and included in your photos depending on your camera app settings.

You can delete all or part of your Location History.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps appMaps .
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Your Timeline Timeline.
  3. Tap More and then Settings.
  4. Scroll to “Location settings.”
    • Delete some of your history: Tap Delete Location History range and then set the range and then Delete.
    • Delete everything: Tap Delete all Location History.

Automatically delete your Location History

You can choose to automatically delete Location History that’s older than 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Your timeline Timeline.
  3. At the top right, tap More Moreand then Settings.
  4. Under “Location settings,” tap Automatically delete Location History.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
