How can I remove "MEET" from my gmail sidebar?

I just logged back on to my work email after two full days away and now MEET is in my sidebar, taking up the room I need for my labels and CHAT.  I need it to not be there as it is impacting my workflow.  I have not found a solution online.  Others in my company did not have this added.

Until Google Meet gives us an opt out feature, I am able to live with the symbols instead of the labels compromise I offered yesterday. Click on the hamburger bars on the top left of the Gmail page next to the Gmail logo. Not perfect but it gets rid of the Meet stuff from staring you in the face.
I think it is deplorable that Google would make such a major change to Gmail like this and then carry on as if we should all be eternally grateful. I’ll bet we are stuck with this for months or years.

I have had Chat disabled for a very long time

Today, because of a post from Susan Walls (thanks) I enabled Chat, and now I just click on any of the three chat icons (sometimes click two times) to hide both Chat and Meet...
That's nice even though the Chat icons remain visible...
But at least we only have to ignore the 3 Chat icons in the bottom of the panel

I also got the update today. GMail offers a new Menu "Chat and Meet" in my settings where I can turn it off. You don't have to download anything. Just wait until the new Menu appears.

So this is fixed until a new member in Googles Jungle of Messengers arrives.

I had chat turned off. Per the recommendation turned chat back on and was able to double click on the hangouts icon to hide Meet. Fantastic!

T B-C,

In the help forum, we answer questions based on knowledge or experience. There have been two types of answers in this thread.
  1. Temporary workarounds have been given based on our experience.
  2. A permanent fix has been promised based on our knowledge of Google's plans. Just as the installation of the MEET side panel took a long time to reach all users, the ability to switch it On or Off will take a long time to reach all users.
There are no other answers we can give. Your ongoing criticism of the available information is unfortunate, but that's what we have to offer. Please come back and tell us when the update reaches your account. It has not yet reached mine, but I feel assured it eventually will.

T B-C, is English your first language?  You wrote: "You ARE indeed incompetent, because you repeatedly post "solutions" that have been rebutted (as in: these are NOT working) by many other posters here, not only myself. Your actions, ergo, are the very definition of incompetence."

In a normal reading of English, that is untrue.  The solutions posted work as they are claimed to work.  The only solutions offered here are how to hide the Meet and Chat pane - and they work.  If you are incompetent to follow instructions, that doesn't mean that the helpers are incompetent.  Nor does the fact that the solution doesn't suit you.  Competence is the ability to know that this is the only available alternative.

Yes, the solution only works for the current session, but it works with a single click (which has been mentioned).  Continuing to complain that there is no solution when we all know that, is incompetent.

It is also incompetent to insult the helpers here who have provided all the options that are available.  If you want an immediate solution that allows you keep chat open, open another browser tab at hangouts.google.com.

Just One Click!

Click one of the three hangouts icon to hide Meet and click again to show up Meet.

Have a nice day!

Third time I've posted this on this topic:
As posted above,
  1. Google employees don't monitor this Community.  To get your opinions in front of Google designers, use the in-product feedback feature under the cog icon > Help (you won't get any response, but all feedback is used).
  2. While the problem is "in" Gmail, it is not "with" Gmail.  Gmail users generally know very little about Meet.  The Meet community is focussed on Meet.  That is where you will get the best help.

    For help, go to the Google Meet Help Centre:
    Google Meet Help Articles
    Google Meet Help Community
Actually, it's the fourth time I've provided the links for the Meet Help Centre.

Paul Fields 7303 wrote: "This is absolutely a Gmail issue, Meet has obviously been deemed an integral part of the "Chat" section in the GMAIL app."

Hi Paul, you and others here can keep insisting it is a Gmail issue, but I will keep repeating that you won't get any help with it here.  There are no Google employees here and the volunteer helpers are experts in Gmail.  The Meet links were thrust on us, just like you and we know hardly anything about Meet which is a G Suite feature.  Users of standard gmail.com accounts don't even see what you are describing.

G Suite users should contact their domain administrator.  It is possible to turn off Hangouts Meet for groups of users, possibly for individuals.  Company policy might make this unavailable, but it's worth asking.

It remains a Meet issue, not a Gmail issue despite anything you might think about the position of the Hangouts/Meet pane.  The issue will be resolved by the Meet team if at all, not the Gmail team.

You should be able to close down the Meet pane by clicking on the double quote icon at the bottom of the pane just like the Hangouts pane.  Has anyone tried that?

That script worked! Meet is gone, now lets see now how long it lasts before Google messes it up again.

Get Tampermonkey extension and add this as a userscript:

Note that gmail changes their class names periodically, so you might have to adjust accordingly after some time.

// ==UserScript==
// @name         Gmail de-meeter
// @namespace    http://www.tampermonkey.com/
// @version      1
// @description  Gmail de-meeter
// @author       X
// @match        https://mail.google.com/mail/u/*
// @grant        GM_addStyle
// ==/UserScript==

(function() {
  'use strict';
  GM_addStyle('.akc, .aeO { display:none !important } .ajl { height: 100vh !important; }');
})();

This totally worked (and is better than the other script provided, because it gives more place for the folders "more" button.
