I am a writer. Most editors and agents will not open attachments and request we paste our manuscript into the body of the email. But, when I do this most of my formatting goes away and looks awful. My margins, paragraphs, line spacing, font, etc. all go away. I want (need) more formatting options, PLEASE.

Using the toolbar, which is sadly inadequate for my needs.

Unfortunately, Gmail is not a full-featured word processor like Microsoft Word.  Copy/pasting from other sources may not render correctly in Gmail.

Hi Carin Milburn!

Although @bkc56 will continue to support you in this thread, I found your predicament curious.

I can certainly understand why some Editors and Agents would want to be cautious with attachments, but have they not provided you with an alternative method for supplying the manuscripts?

Asking because I happen to have a number of semi-famous authors as friends and typically if an email attachment is not a permitted form of submission then the Editor/Agents provide a way for the author upload/share/etc the manuscript in another way.

I am not at the semi-level. Just trying to get my stories read, agents aren't very forgiving as they get hundreds of submissions a week. I have a feeling some of my stuff doesn't get read because the agent will look at the format and automatically delete it.

Carin Milburn,

Yes I understand. I reached out to several people I know that work exclusively in that industry. I gave them a brief description of what was required and, well, to quote them: "That's bizarre. It's unprofessional. I'd find an agent/editor that is running their business as a proper professional."

They did also wonder if it's just a way to get you to go away. They also pointed out that for editors, which typically are involved in "editing" the manuscripts, and such submission could not be easily "marked up".

2 of my friends indicated that they just submitted via uploads to DropBox accounts setup by the editor/agent's company, and the other 2 used Google sharing tools.
