Gmail Rejecting Password

As of a few hours ago, Gmail is rejecting the password for popping email with Outlook. The same thing is happening with some friends in a small business. They POP their email out of Gmail, and they're constantly getting the "Enter your user name and password" warning. What has changed? I can't POP my account with Outlook or my iPhone (Apple Mail), but I can access it through the web.

Same problem here with multiple gmail accounts. I'm conscious that I must search for a new provider and update all my subscribed accounts. Googel sucks!

Hello,

You may need to enable 2SV: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185839 and then use the app password instead of your regular password: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833.

Did Google change their policies to require 2SV for POP3 and/or IMAP?  If so, when and where was a notification of that deadline published?

FWIW, they are not requiring 2SV for webmail logins as of a few minutes ago.

Is there anywhere one can go to determine the status of POP3 access and/or IMAP access?

Same here.  And Windows Live Mail checks for new mail every 5 minutes.  Using 2 step verification is not an option.

Same problem here and it just started but I see no change of service notice to cause this.  It is like there POP3 is broken right now.

Sigh.  Google can do better than a low-key notification and vague instructions, but to be fair they did send a couple of emails with the subject "You may access to some of your third-party apps" pointing to this support page:

The last one was over a month ago and the tempo of the emails never increased...smh.

The guidance from the support page above is pretty vague and tailored only to a lowest common denominator audience.  I haven't verified how to reconfigure things yet, just following search breadcrumbs from "using gmail after May 30".

I'm using Thunderbird and am starting to go through this:

It's Google's new policy as of 30th May. There was an email about it a while ago:

To help keep your account secure, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. Instead, you’ll need to sign in using [sign in with google] or other more secure technologies, like OAuth 2.0

So, goodbye Gmail... no more reading my emails for you.

Edit: this has made it impossible to even use my email client for other accounts... it just constantly pops up asking for gmails login. I'll have to delete the account in the client! Thank you so much Google, NOT!

E.J.--What if I don't want to use 2SV?  I have been using Outlook on my desktop for many years and have had no problems accessing GMail via POP.  Now they want to mess us up by requiring 2SV if we want to get an app password to use in Outlook??  Seems like a really stupid step or are they deliberately trying to push customers away from Outlook or other desktop apps?
I don't want to use 2SV on my desktop computer at home--it is plenty secure. Or is there a way to get the app password without using 2SV on a secure computer?

An ultimate security is when a device is not accessible. Not accessible means - it's offline and it's not in this galaxy. Once it's on our planet and it works it's insecure by design. Life itself is insecure by design, making something more secure usually means taking life out it.

Just for the record - ONCE you enter app password in MTA you WILL receive all your mail stored @ gmail.com that you received earlier but not deleted.
