Image Alt Text in Emails Showing in Preview

Hi,

When we send users emails, we currently have alt text for our images. Recently we discovered that the alt text is showing in the email preview (Ex. The email will say: "Woman looks at phone" [alt text] and then the header and content will follow. It even does it for our logo.).

My questions:

1. Is there a way to stop the alt text from showing in the email preview?
2. If no, is there any consequences to removing the alt text (just for emails) altogether?

I do know it is best practice and is good if the image is blocked or the user is visually impaired. Feel free to elaborate on those reasons or provide more. Any information is appreciated.

Thanks!

(Also if this isn't where I should post this question, please let me know. Thanks!!)

I assume that, by "preview", you are referring to the snippets in the conversation list.  If so, then the text shown there comes from the plain text version of the message.  If the message does not include a plain text version, then Gmail will attempt to convert the HTML.

So, to control what shows in the snippet, include a plain text version (using multipart/alternative) in the message.  Gmail will show the HTML version when the message is opened, if it follows the plain text.

Hi, Thank you for your response. I will pass your information on.

Just in case this changes your answer, when I said preview, I meant the email pop up that comes on your phone when you get a new email. It's also showing in the preview when you go to open the email (but before you actually open it; it's showing in the text that appears when you look at your list of emails).
