Find emails

The fastest way to find emails is by searching your inbox.

Search your inbox

Search for emails or browse categories in your inbox.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Inbox app Inbox.
  2. Search for a phrase or browse your inbox categories:
  • Search: Tap Search Search. Then enter the words you’re looking for.
  • Browse: Tap Menu Menu. Then choose a section.

Note: On a phone or tablet, you can only search emails from the past 30 days.

Pin emails in your inbox

To keep an email in your inbox, click Pin Pin.

To show only pinned items, go to the top and tap Show pins Pin Slider.

Delete your search history

You can delete past Inbox searches. Your Gmail search history won’t be deleted.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Inbox app Inbox.
  2. Click Menu Menu and thenSettings Settings.
  3. If asked, select an account.
  4. Tap Clear search history and then Remove.

Refine your search

Get more specific results with these search operators.

Basic operators
Operator How to use it
- Example: dinner -movie
+ Example: +unicorn
OR Includes messages which have term A or term B. OR must be in all caps.
( ) Lets operators work on a group of words.
" " Search for an exact phrase. Capitalization is ignored.

from: Find emails from a specific person.
to: Find emails to a specific person.
cc: Finds recipients in the cc field.
bcc: Finds recipients in the bcc field. You can’t find emails in which you were blind carbon copied.

in: reminder Searches for reminders.
in: snoozed Searches for snoozed emails.
in: pinned Searches for pinned emails.
in: unread Searches for unread emails.
in: read Searches for read emails.
in: anywhere Search for messages anywhere in Inbox, even Spam, and Trash.
in: inbox Searches emails in your inbox.
in: trash Searches emails in your trash
in: spam Searches emails in spam.
In: [label] Searches for emails which have a certain label.
In: done Searches emails marked as done.
Operator How to use it
after: or newer: Search for messages sent or gotten after a certain time.
newer_than: Search by a relative date using d(ay), m(onth), and y(ear).
before: or older: Search for messages sent or gotten before a certain time.
older_than: Search by a relative date using d(ay), m(onth), and y(ear).
Email content
Operator How to use it
subject: Search for words in the subject.
filename: Search for an attachment by name or type
has: attachment Search for emails that have an attachment.

rfc822msgid: Find a message by the message-id header
size: Search for messages larger than the specified size in bytes
deliveredto: Search for messages delivered to a particular email address
