I just added several new members to the Google Group that I manage and a few of them did not have @gmail addresses.  They all were successfully added to the member list.
Make sure the format is "Display Name"<MemberName@yahoo.com>
(That is, make sure there is no space between the end quote after display name and the < for the email address.)

Here's what I found:
1. You can't modify an existing name, you have to first delete it.
2. Make sure the name that you want to add or reinstate is in your contacts list exactly the way you want it to appear in the Member list.
3. Select "Add members", start to type in the contact name, and you will see a drop-down list with all your contacts starting with the first letter(s) you entered.
4. Select the desired contact, and it will be added.
Contact MUST be in your Contacts list or it won't appear in the drop-down list, and you won't be able to add it except manually, see the recommended answer above.

Thanks for the info. It appears Google has restored the method that worked in the old version of Google Groups.

That's how I've done it for years..it doesn't work now. It still puts the email address in both places.

Thank you so much for the help.  I went into 'Group Setting' and down to Member Privacy and changed the drop down to reflect 'Either Display Name or Google Profile' then saved the change.  Went to add new members and used the format  "Display Name"<MemberName@yahoo.com> (and made sure there was no space between the end quote after display name and the < for the email address.)

Success!

I assume that this is nice if you have a gmail account and all those contacts, but what if all the other people who have access to the members list don't? It's confusing!
Hope that someday, this will be resolved.

The download CSV file even has a place for "Nickname" so someone somewhere understands the need or did at sometime in the past.

The download CSV does not contain the names even for members of the organization, much less for any Gmail account, and other accounts for public groups.

I found just this week that I can now subscribe people to my Google Groups manually, with the subscribers' first and last names in the left-hand column, the way it was in the previous version. I am very pleased to see this! Maybe all the input from Google Groups owners and managers did some good!

When adding names, I use this format: [first name][space][last name][space][<email address>]

Thank you - however that doesn't work.

I suspect the person you are trying to add must be a User,  Just being a contact doesn't appear to work for someone outside the organisation the way it used to.

Do you perhaps have any other suggestions?

And how high is this on the list for being fixed (that is, put back the way it used to work)?

Thank you,

Clem

I found a work around today but it is completely hokey.
So I went into the Group Settings > Member Privacy.
For identification it was currently set to Display Name or Organization Profile.
I set it to Display Name Profile Only.
I saved the settings.
I went back to the members screen and added a Member as: First Last<johndoe@xyz.com>
The name looked correct for the new user but all other gmail users it did not show correctly.
I went back and toggled the identification setting to Display Name or Organization Profile and then all Members display names showed correctly including the new one I added that did not have a gmail address.
