Take & assign topics in classic Groups

If you're signed in to a work or school account, the options you see might be different. To learn more, contact your administrator.

In Collaborative inbox groups, you can assign topics to group members. This is useful when you want to get a response from a specific member.

Before you begin

Turn on Collaborative Inbox features for the group.

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. Click the name of a group.
  4. On the right, click Manage group.
  5. Go to Generaland thenEnable additional Google Groups features.
  6. Select Collaborative Inbox and then click Save changes.

Allow questions to be taken and assigned

Decide who can take and assign conversations, then make sure they have the "Moderate metadata" permission. 

Note:  This feature is available only in classic Groups

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. Click the name of a group.
  4. On the right, click Manage group.
  5. On the left, go to Permissionsand thenPosting permissions.

  6. In the Moderate metadata section, select who should be allowed to take and assign topics.
  7. Click Save changes.

Take a question

People who have the "Moderate metadata" permission can take conversations (assign conversations to themselves).

Note:  This feature is available only in classic Groups

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. Click the name of a group.
  4. Point to a conversation and then check the box beside it.
  5. At the top, click Actions.
  6. Select Take. The name of the person the conversation is assigned to appears in the box at the top of the conversation.

Assign or reassign a conversation

People who have the "Moderate metadata" permission can assign and reassign conversation.

Note:  This feature is available only in classic Groups

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. Click the name of a group.
  4. Point to a conversation and then check the box beside it.
  5. At the top, click Actions.
  6. Select Assign.
  7. Next to the name of a member, click Assign.

View messages that are assigned to you

Note:  This feature is available only in classic Groups

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. Click the name of a group.
  4. At the top, click Filters.
  5. Next to "Assigned to me," select the button.
  6. Click Apply selected filters.

Mark a conversation as resolved

People who have the "Moderate metadata" permission can mark conversations as resolved.

Note:  This feature is available only in classic Groups

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. Click the name of a group.
  4. Point to a conversation and then check the box beside it.
  5. At the top, click Actions.
  6.  

Mark a conversation as unassigned

People who have the "Moderate metadata" permission can mark conversations as unassigned.

Note:  This feature is available only in classic Groups

  1. Sign in to Google Groups.
  2. Click My groups.
  3. Click the name of a group.
  4. Point to a conversation and then check the box beside it.
  5. At the top, click Actions.
  6. Select Drop.
