Why are Facebook and Messenger are auto-updating when I've selected "Do Not"?

Hi,

I'd like to know why the Facebook app and FB's Messenger app are auto updating on my LG G4 when I've got "Do Not Auto-Update Apps" selected in Play Store settings. I've gone into the individual apps on Play Store and "Auto-Update" is unchecked. And yet I'm still receiving Facebook/Messenger update successful notifications.

How is Facebook circumnavigating my Play Store preferences and forcing their updates? I thought ignoring setting preferences was against the Google Play Store rules?

Any help in stopping this would be great.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Welcome to the Google Play Help Forum.

I'd suggest you try the below troubleshooting steps:

1. Clear cache for Facebook app (Go to Settings > Apps or Application Manager > ALL > Facebook > Storage > Clear cache > OK).

2. Clear cache data for the Google Play Store app.

3.
Uninstall and reinstall the Play Store updates. (Go to Settings > Apps or Application Manager > Google Play Store app > Uninstall Updates > OK). As long as you have a strong Internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data), your Play Store app will update to the latest version within a few minutes.
4. Once you're done with the above steps, please try remove and add your Google Account on your device by following below steps:

Remove Google Account:

  1. Open your device's Settings app.

  2. Under "Accounts," touch Google and then the account you want to remove.

  3. Touch the Menu icon in the top right corner of the screen.

  4. Touch Remove account.

Add Google Account:

  1. Open your device's Settings app.

  2. Under "Accounts," touch Add account > Google Google.

  3. Follow the instructions to add your account.
If the above steps don't help, I'd suggest you contact our one-on-one support team using this link for better assistance.

Let me know the result.

Best,
Sonya

Wow the expert reply doesn't even make an effort. Facebook has enabled its *own* updating logic, totally independent from the Play Store. It's a little tough to find (and the UI will probably change anyway), but at least in Messenger I went digging and found the Auto-update setting and could turn it off. Checking for Facebook now.

All those "experts" do is copy/paste someone's old answer in every similar thread, when in reality you're correct - Facebook has arrogantly began using their own partial updates which bypass the "do not update" feature on Google Play.

thank you so much, hunting for an in-app option worked

Yeah, I asked this months ago but the response was absolutely useless. Your basic 'wipe everything, download again'. I've still got this problem with my phone (which was factory reset since then). Even my daughters two phones (one went through a reset, the other new) also keep getting forced updates from Facebook. I honestly don't know how Google Play haven't reprimanded them for going against the TOS.

Fortunately I was able to find and turn it off in both apps. I'm sure this UI will change, but at least today...
MESSENGER: Three-bars icon in lower right -> Gray "person head" icon in upper left -> "App updates"
FACEBOOK: Three-bars icon in upper left -> "App Settings" -> "App Updates"

And yes, also surprised Google is letting them get away with this.

Instagram is also affected... could not find an in-app option for turning disrespectful, forced and unsolicited(!) app updates, ignoring my own settings...
This is a serious issue, Google. We, users, should not be forced to look for in-app features (on the mercy of the developers) which circumvent YOUR policies and features...
You could easily deprecate your Auto-update preference settings if you are OK with this...

I couldn't find anywhere to disable updates in the app.  It's a right dog's dinner that app - just crap plastered all over the place.  Do they realise all you want is a simple way of keeping in touch with people?

Removed it altogether and installed facebook lite instead.

It's so annoying, Google should do something about it. Supposedly in App Manager, Messenger,  App Permissions I had just given permissions to camera, microphone and storage for Messenger (besides "notifications" blocked)... but still in <Permissions Settings> I clicked <More> and then selected ALL PERMISSIONS for this app and I realized Messenger has access practically to all and the worst we can't change those permits, for example.. modify or delete SD card contents, full network access, view network connections, prevent phone from sleeping, view Wi-Fi connections, run at startup.. etc. to name a a few, but what called my ATTENTION  was it has permission to CHANGE NETWORK CONNECTIVITY? What the hell? So that particular permission which I can't change was the culprit, I don't remember seeing that before, maybe Messenger added that in its own updates. It was weird for me.. to find out a couple of times in the morning a notification saying "messenger successfully updated" when my phone was having Wi-Fi and Data Network off to save battery overnight. THIS means, this app was turning on my Wi-Fi or Data without my consent, I am pissed. Indeed Messenger has its own App Updates settings, and it also has notifications for these when done. I don't remove the app because it is useful, but the same i don't like software to update itself in my computers, the same I don't like this happens with my phones, it would be nice if Google stops these abusive and intrusive privileges from Facebook apps, especially if downloaded from Google Play.

Supposedly it was like this:

• System Interference:
◦An app downloaded from Google Play (or its components or derivative elements) must not make changes to the user’s device outside of the app without the user’s knowledge and consent.

So if I downloaded the app via Google Play, it shouldn't be able to update itself outside Google Play right?

Yes! Finally see that this was on, although the auto app updates selection was not. Pretty sneaky, but this should work. thanks, Soura!!
