Use Google Play Movies for Chrome & Chromebook

Enjoy videos on your Chrome browser or Chromebook by using the Google Play Movies & TV extension.

After installing the extension, you can watch videos from your library on your computer, get info cards, or watch videos on your TV using Chromecast.

If you're using a Chromebook, you can download movies to watch when you don't have an Internet connection.

Install the Play Movies Chrome extension

Step 1: Download the latest version of Chrome

To use the Google Play Movies & TV extension, you need to have the latest version of Chrome. Here's how to check if updates are available.

  1. Open Chrome Chrome.
  2. On the top right of the browser toolbar, click the Chrome menu More.
  3. Click HelpAbout Google Chrome.
  4. If an update is available, click Relaunch (under the version number) to install updates.
    • If you see "Google Chrome is up to date," you're using the latest version.
Step 2: Install the Google Play Movies & TV extension
  1. Open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Go to Google Play Movies & TV in the Chrome Web Store.
  3. Click Add To Chrome.
  4. To open the Google Play Movies & TV extension, click Launch App.

Watch videos on Chrome or Chromebook

First, install the Google Play Movies & TV extension from the Chrome web store. Then, follow the instructions below.

Using a Mac or PC
  1. Open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Open a new browser tab.
  3. Type: chrome://apps into your Chrome browser's address bar.
  4. Select Google Play Movies. You may need to click All apps​ first.
  5. Select and play a video.
Using a Chromebook
  1. Near the bottom of your screen, click the Launcher Launcher.
  2. Select Google Play Movies.
  3. Select and play a video.

Watch on your TV using Chromecast

With the Google Play Movies & TV extension, you can play videos on your TV using Chromecast.

Tip: Before streaming videos, make sure that your computer is connected to the same WiFi network as your Chromecast.

Using a Mac or PC
  1. Open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Open a new browser tab.
  3. Type: chrome://apps into your Chrome browser's address bar.
  4. Select Google Play Movies.
  5. Near the top right of your Play Movies window, click the Cast icon Cast.
  6. Under "Connect to a device," select your Chromecast from the device list.
  7. Select and play a video.

​To disconnect from your Chromecast, click the Cast icon Cast > Stop casting.

Using a Chromebook
  1. Make sure you've installed the Google Cast extension from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Near the bottom of your screen, click the Launcher Launcher.
  3. Select Google Play Movies. You may need to click All apps​ first.
  4. Near the top right of your video player, click the Cast icon Cast.
  5. Under "Connect to a device," select your Chromecast from the device list.
  6. Select and play a video.

To disconnect from your Chromecast, click the Cast icon Cast > Stop casting.

Download Videos on your Chromebook

Use the Chrome extension to download videos on your Chromebook and enjoy them offline.

Downloading videos on your Chromebook
  1. Make sure you've installed the Google Play Movies & TV extension from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Near the bottom of your screen, click the Launcher Launcher.
  3. Select Google Play Movies. You may need to click All apps first.
  4. Under a movie or TV episode in your library, click the Download icon Not saved.
The Download icon will fill in red to indicate your download progress. You can watch your video offline once the download icon turns into a checkmark Downloaded. To remove a video, click the checkmark Downloaded
Troubleshoot problems downloading videos on your Chromebook

Getting an error about "too many devices"?

If you see a message that your video is on too many devices, remove the video from one of your other devices and try downloading again.

Video has stopped downloading

If your video appears to have stopped downloading, try the following.

  1. Wait at least 5 minutes to see if the video keeps downloading.
    • Downloads can start quickly and slow down in the middle. Sometimes it can take a few minutes for progress to show on your download.
  2. Without canceling your download, close and reopen Google Play Movies .
    • This can help a download which was stuck due to network problems.
  3. Cancel and restart the download.
    • Underneath your video, cancel your download by clicking the download icon Not saved. Click it again to restart.
