Use bookmarks, notes, definitions, & translations

Most books on Google Play Books use Flowing text mode to adjust to fit your screen when you change page features like font size or line spacing.

If you’re reading a book that has Flowing text mode, you can take notes and add bookmarks. You can also translate, define, and search for words.

Check whether you’re in Flowing text mode

If you highlight a word and a list of options shows up, you’re in Flowing text mode.

Bookmark a page

  1. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. To add a bookmark, tap the top right of the page.

Highlight in a book

  1. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Touch and hold a word.
  4. Use the blue sliders to select words you’d like to highlight.
  5. Tap the highlight color you'd like to use.

Add notes to a book

  1. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Touch and hold a word.
  4. Use the blue sliders to select where you want to make your note.
  5. Tap Add note .
  6. Enter your note.
  7. Tap More More and then Save.

Change, delete, or see your notes

  • To change a note, tap the highlighted text where you added the note. Make your changes, then tap More More and then Save.
  • To delete a note, tap the highlighted text, then tap More Moreand then Delete and then Remove.
  • To see all your notes, tap the center of the page. At the top right, tap Contents Contents and then Notes.

Translate, define, or search for a word

  1. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open a book.
  3. Touch and hold a word. To select more than one word, use the sliders.
  4. Select an option:
    • To see a definition, highlight a word. Only one word can be selected.
    • To translate, tap Translate . Select languages to translate to and from.
    • To search for the selection in the book or on the web, tap Search Search.
