Buy and read eBooks

You can use Google Play Books to download and read eBooks on more than one device. You can also upload files and print books.

Buy and download eBooks

You can search and buy available eBooks from play.google.com. 

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open a mobile browser, like Safari and then open play.google.com/store/books.
  2. Sign in to the same Google account as the one that you have on your Google Play Books app.
  3. Search for an eBook or browse recommendations.
    • To learn more about an eBook, tap the cover image.
    • To download the eBook, tap the price and then Buy eBook.
    • To read a sample, tap Free Sample.

Important: You can't buy or rent eBooks using the Google Play Books app on your iPhone and iPad. 

Viewing options

Tip: Not all eBooks offer more than one viewing option.

Depending on the book, you can view an eBook as:
  • Original pages: Read the book in a fixed-page layout that usually matches the printed edition.
  • Flowing text: Change display options like font, text size and line spacing.

Open and read the eBook on your Google Play app

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, download the free Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  3. Sign in to the Google Account that you bought your eBook with.
  4. At the bottom right, tap Library.
  5. Select your eBook.
    • To change the font, text size or other formatting, at the top, tap Display options Display options.
    • To jump to a chapter, bookmark or note, at the bottom, tap Contents Table of contents . Select a chapter or section.

Find free samples of eBooks

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, make sure that you’re connected to the Internet.
  2. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  3. Choose an action:
    • To find recommended books, tap Home.
    • Tap a book.
    • To start reading, tap Free sample.
Once you download a book, you can read it offline.

Upload files and print books

Uploading files is only available on desktop and Android devices.

Tip: You can only print ebooks using your computer.

Dark mode

To use dark mode for the Play Books app, you must be on iOS 13 and up. 
  1. On your iPhone or iPad,  open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Open Settings Settings.
  3. Tap Display and Brightness.
  4. At the top, tap Dark.

Rent books

  1. On your device, open Google Play Books Play Books.
  2. Browse textbooks for rent or search for a specific book.
  3. Select the book that you want to rent.
    • To find out if you can rent the book: Check whether it says 'Rent' next to the price.
    • To find out for how long the rental lasts: Select 'Rent' then check the information in the pop-up.
  4. To rent the book, select the price then complete the check-out process.
    • Your rental period starts when you make your purchase, even if you haven’t opened the book.
  5. To find out how much time you have before the rental expires, go to Library then check the book’s cover.
Tip: Books with rental periods that have ended will be shown as 'Expired'. If you haven't finished with the book, you can buy or rent it again. Your old highlights and notes are still available during new rental periods.
