Buy & read ebooks

You can use Google Play Books to download and read ebooks on more than one device. You can also upload files and print books.

Download & install Google Play Books

  1. Make sure your Android phone or tablet is connected to the internet.
  2. Download the Google Play Books app Play Books.

Buy ebooks

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Search for the ebook you’d like to read.
  3. Select an ebook and thentap the price.
  4. [Optional] Depending on the book, you may also be able to read a sample. Tap Free Sample.

Viewing options

Tip: Not all ebooks offer more than one viewing option.

Depending on the book, you can view an ebook as:
  • Original Pages: Read the book in a fixed-page layout that usually matches the printed edition.
  • Flowing text: Change display options like font, text size, and line spacing.

Read ebooks

You can change the font, text size, and jump to chapters when you read ebooks.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. Select a book.
  3. Tap the center of the page.
    • Swipe to quickly flip through pages.
    • To jump to a chapter, bookmark, or note, tap Contents Contents.
    • To change font, text size, and line spacing, tap Display options Display options.
    • To change brightness or background color, tap Display options Display optionsand thenTone.
    • To rotate your screen, or adjust based on time of day, tap Settings Settings.
  4. To go back to your ebook, tap the center of the page again, or tap Back.

Upload PDF & EPUB files

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Play Books app Play Books.
  2. At the bottom, tap Home and then Profile and then Play Books Settings and then Enable PDF uploading.
  3. Download a PDF or EPUB file on your device.
  4. Open your Downloads or Files app.
  5. Find the file.
  6. Tap More Moreand then Open With and then Play Books or Upload to Play Books.

You can find uploaded files in your Library and then Uploads.

Move the Play Books app to an SD card

You can store your Play Books app on an SD card.

Before you begin

To move the Play Books app to an SD card:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open Settings Settings.
  2. Tap Apps and then Play Books Play Books and then Storage.
  3. Under "Storage used," tap Change.
  4. Pick your SD card.
  5. Follow the on-screen steps.

Print books

You can only print ebooks using your computer.

Important: Some ebooks have limits on how many pages you can print. These limits are set by the book’s publisher and vary depending on the specific book. These limits are known as Digital Rights Management (DRM).

Dark Mode

You’ll only be able to do these steps if you’re on Android 10 or up. Learn how to check and update your Android version
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open Settings Settings.
  2. Tap Display.
  3. Tap Dark theme.
  4. Open the Google Play Books app Play Books.

Rent textbooks & books

You can rent digital versions of some textbooks and books on Google Play Books. 

Important: Your rental period will start as soon as you make your purchase, even if you haven’t opened the book.

  1. On your device, open Google Play Books Play Books.
  2. Browse textbooks for rent or search for a specific book.
  3. Click the book you want to rent.
  4. Check whether it says "Rent" next to the price. You’ll also find how many days you can rent the book.
  5. To rent, click the price and check out.
  6. To find how much time you have before the rental expires, go to your library and check the book’s cover.

Rentals that have ended say "Expired." If you aren’t finished with the book, you can rent it again or buy the textbook. You’ll still be able to find your highlights and notes.
