Turn on background data

To use the Play Store app, you'll need to turn background data on for your device. This means that apps may download data for future reference or provide you with notifications even when you're not using the app. Settings are different on each version of Android. Check which version of Android you have.  

On Android 7.0 or higher

When data saver mode is on and Wi-Fi isn't available, Google Play may be affected. You can choose to let Google Play continue getting background data via mobile data in data saver mode.

1. Open your device's Settings app .
2. Tap Network & Internet.
3. Tap Data usage  Data saver.
4. If data saver is off, you don't have to do anything. If data saver is on, continue to step 4.
5. Tap Unrestricted data access.
6. Scroll down and tap the Google Play Store .
7. Tap the app or service that you wish to turn on.

On Android 5.0 to 6.0

1. Open your device's Settings app .
2. Tap Data usage  Mobile data usage.
3. Make sure that you're viewing the network for which you want to view or restrict app data usage.
4. Scroll down and tap the Google Play Store .
5. Tap Background data  Unrestricted data usage.

On Android 4.4 or lower

1. Open your device's main Settings app .
2. Under 'Wireless & networks', tap Data usage.
3. In the top-right corner, tap Menu .
4. Tap the box next to 'Auto-sync data'.
5. When the dialogue box 'Turn auto-sync data on?' appears, tap OK.

 

Note: On some devices, your background data options may be under Settings  Battery & Data Manager  Delivery  Background data.
