You can fix issues that you find when you download, read, or listen to ebooks or audiobooks.
Step 1: Check your connection & updates- Make sure your Android phone or tablet is connected to Wi-Fi or a mobile network.
- Make sure your Play Books app is up-to-date with the latest version.
- To refresh the app:
- At the bottom, tap the Home tab.
- Tap and hold the screen below the search bar.
- Swipe down to refresh.
- To close the app:
- Swipe up at the bottom of your screen.
- Swipe up to close Play Books app .
- To reopen the app: Open the Play Books app and try again.
- Open the Play Books app .
- At the bottom, tap Library.
- Under Your books, check the Download status.
- If filters don’t include "Downloaded," tap Not downloaded.
- On your Android phone or tablet, go to Play Store.
- At the top right, tap the Profile icon.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions.
- To find the book you want:
- Tap Budget & order history.
- On the left, tap More Show or hide from my library Show in my library.
- Make sure your phone or tablet is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Open the Play Books app .
- You can remove or re-download the book:
- To remove the downloaded book:
- Press and hold on the book.
- Tap Remove download Remove.
- To re-download the book:
- Press and hold on the book.
- Tap Download .
- To remove the downloaded book:
Important: Manual sync refreshes the account data for all the user's apps made by Google, including any with auto sync turned off.
- Open your device's Settings app.
- Tap About Google Account Account sync.
- If you have more than one account on your device, tap the one you want to sync.
- Tap More Sync now.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Settings app.
- Tap Storage Free up space.
- Choose what to remove from your device.
- Re-download the book.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps or Apps & notifications See all apps.
- Tap Google Play Books Storage & cache Clear cache.
- Tap Clear storage OK.
- Open the Play Books app and sign in.
- Re-download your books.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps or Apps & notifications See all apps.
- Tap Google Play Books Uninstall.
- Open the Play Store app .
- Search for "Google Play Books."
- Select the app.
- Tap Install.
- Turn off your device and then on again.
- Open the Play Books app and try again.
Try to read your book in a different way, like:
- On the Web Reader.
- With the Play Books app on a different device, such as another Android device, or one on iPhone and iPad.
If a book you pre-ordered was released but isn’t available to read, cancel the order and re-order the book.
- Go to play.google.com.
- At the top right, choose your profile icon.
- Select Payments & subscriptions Budget & order history.
- To cancel your pre-order, select your pre-order item and click Cancel. Then, follow the prompts.
- Search for the book and repurchase it or, if relevant, subscribe to the series the book is in.
