Set up a screen lock for the Google Pay app

To help protect your information if your phone gets lost or stolen, the Google Pay app requires a screen lock. If your device is locked, the Google Pay app can’t be opened.

  • If your device has a screen lock set up, it’ll automatically become your app lock during setup.
  • If your device doesn’t have a screen lock set up, add one during setup.

Screen locks that work with the Google Pay app

You can unlock the app with the following methods:

  • PIN
  • Pattern
  • Password
  • Fingerprint
  • Iris scan
  • 3D face unlock

Why a screen lock is required

To help protect your information in case your phone gets lost or stolen, the Google Pay app requires a screen lock. If your device is locked, the Google Pay app can’t be opened.

Set or change a screen lock

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Security.
  3. To pick a screen lock, tap Screen lock.
    • If you already set a lock, before you can pick a different lock, you must enter your PIN, pattern, or password.
  4. Tap the screen lock option you want to use. Follow the on-screen instructions.
