Add a parent to your family group

If you're the family manager, you can add a parent to your family group.

Add or remove a parent

To add someone as a parent to your family group, they need to be 18 or older and be in your family group.

  1. Go to g.co/YourFamily.
  2. Select the family member that you want. 
  3. Select Give parental permissions or Remove parental permissions and then Confirm.

Play Store app

  1. Open the Google Play Store app Google Play.
  2. At the top right, tap the profile icon.
  3. Tap Settings and then Family and then Manage family members.
  4. Tap Manage parental privileges.
  5. Choose someone to add or remove as a parent.
  6. Tap Confirm.
    • An email notification is sent when parent privileges are changed.

Family Link app

  1. Open the Family Link app Family Link.
  2. In the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Manage family.
  3. Choose someone to add or remove as a parent.
  4. Tap Remove or add parent privileges and then Confirm.

In the Google One app

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google One app Google One.
  2. Tap Menu and then Settings.
  3. Tap Manage family settings and then Manage family group.
  4. Tap Manage parental privileges.
  5. Choose someone to add or remove as a parent.
  6. Tap Remove.

Remove yourself as a parent

If the family manager added you as a parent, you can remove your parental privileges. Family managers can't remove themselves from a family without deleting the family.

  1. Go to g.co/YourFamily.
  2. Select your name.
  3. Select Remove parental permissions and then Remove.

Play Store app

  1. Open the Play Store app Google Play.
  2. At the top right, tap the profile icon.
  3. Tap Manage your Google Account and then People and sharing and then Manage your family group.
  4. Choose the parent whose privileges you want to remove.
  5. Tap Remove parental permissions.

Family Link app

  1. Open the Family Link app Family Link.
  2. In the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Manage family.
  3. Choose someone to remove as a parent.
  4. Tap Remove parental permissions and then Confirm.

Parental privileges

Parents have most of the privileges that the family manager has, which include these privileges:

  • Use Family Link to manage a child's Google Account. This includes settings that manage Google activity, screen time and location.
  • Approve Google Play purchases or downloads made with the family payment method if purchase approvals are on.
  • View family member purchases made with the family payment method.
  • Change family members' purchase approval settings on Google Play.
    • Purchase approval settings apply only to purchases made through Google Play's billing system.

Only the family manager can:

Adults in your family can subscribe to Google One. The Google One plan manager doesn't have to be the same person as the family manager. Learn how to add family members to your Google One membership plan.
