Join a family on Google

When you join a family group, you can share family services across Google with up to five family members.

How family groups work

When you join a family group, you can:

  • Use the family payment method: If your family manager has set it up, you can use the family payment method for purchases on Google Play.
  • Use family services: Use or subscribe to family services like Google One, Google Play Family Library, Google Play Music family plan and the YouTube TV family plan. Visit families.google.com to have a look at all the services available for your family.

Join a family group

If someone has invited you to join their family, you'll receive an email or text message with your invitation. Follow the instructions in the invitation to join the family group.

The information that family members can see about one another

When you join a family, your family members may see your name, photo and email address.

Because your family manager is responsible for the family payment method, they'll receive receipts for anything that you've purchased using the family payment method.

Your family members will be able to see content added to your Family Library.

If your family shares Google One membership, your family members will be able to see how much shared storage you've used. Your files aren't shared with your family.

Requirements for joining a family

To join a family group, you must:

  • Have a Google Account. You can't join a family with a Google Account from work, school or another organisation.
  • Live in the same country as the family manager.
  • Not be part of another family group.
  • Not have switched family groups in the last 12 months.

Leave or switch family groups

Before you can switch family groups, you need to leave the one that you're currently in.

What happens when you leave your family group
  • You can only switch families every 12 months. If you leave a family group and join a new one, you won't be able to join another family group for 12 months.
  • You won't be able to make purchases using the family payment method. Any pending purchases might still be charged.
  • You'll lose access to the Google Play Family Library and any items added by family members.
  • Any purchases that you've added to the Google Play Family Library will be removed and your family members will lose access to them.
  • If your family manager has purchased the Google Play Music family plan, you'll lose access to it.
  • If your family shares Google One membership and you are the Google One plan manager, your family members will stop using your shared storage. If someone runs out of storage, their files will be safe, but they won't be able to store anything new. Learn more about what happens when people run out of space.
    • Your family will also lose access to extra member benefits and Google experts.
  • If your family shares Google One membership and someone else is the Google One plan manager, you will lose access to their shared storage, extra member benefits and contact with Google experts.
  • You'll keep your Google Account and any content that you've purchased using the family payment method.

Troubleshoot problems

Problem with my invitation

The invitation has already been used

Each invitation has a unique sign-up link that can only be used once.

If you forward your invitation to someone else, they can use your unique link to join the family group.

If you've used your invitation with another Google Account, you can leave the family group and ask for another invitation to use with your other email address.

The invitation has expired

Invitations to join a family expire in two weeks.

If your invitation has expired, contact the family manager and ask them to send you a new invitation.

Problem while joining a family group

  • Switching families: You can only switch families once every 12 months.
  • Country restriction: You have to live in the same country as your family manager.

Your family group has been disabled

Your family manager needs to visit myaccount.google.com to restore their account.

You're already in a family group

You can only be in one family group at a time. If you want to join a different family group, you'll have to leave your current family group and then join the new one.

My family manager has deleted our family group

If your family manager has deleted your family group:

  • You won't be able to make purchases using the family payment method. Any pending purchases might still be charged.
  • You'll lose access to the Google Play Family Library and any items added by family members.
  • Any purchases that you've added to the Google Play Family Library will be removed and your family members will lose access to them.
  • If your family manager has subscribed to the Google Play Music family plan, you'll lose access to it.

Note: You can only change family groups once a year. If you join or create a new family group, you won’t be able to join another one for 12 months.
