Support for Works with Nest ending

Starting September 29, 2023, all Works with Nest connections will stop working. You can continue to automate your home by creating Routines in the Google Home app’s automation tab or the script editor, available 2023 to Public Preview.

Moving to Works with Google Home

Works with Nest (WWN) was the original way that third party partners could access and control your Nest products. They were fully integrated with a Nest product and could check and change its status.

Works with Nest connections require a Nest Account to be set up prior to August 19, 2019. New Works with Nest connections cannot be set up after August 31, 2019, but your existing connections will continue to work with your Nest Account until September 29, 2023.

Works with Google Home (WWGH), formerly Works with Hey Google, enables the Google Assistant to control all your connected devices. You can use the Google Assistant to create Assistant Routines in the Home or Assistant apps. We’ve announced two new aspects of WWGH specifically for the products in your home: Device Access and Home Routines.

Migrating to Works with Google Home starts with a Google Account

Moving to a Google Account will give you the benefit of a single account, seamless experiences, and the ability to align homes and home members across the Nest and Google Home apps.

Note: If you want to use your Nest devices with Amazon Alexa, Works with Google Home (WWGH) or the upcoming script editor, you must migrate your Nest account to a Google Account. Once completed, it is not reversible. During the migration process, you will need to remove and disconnect all your WWN third-party product connections (also not reversible). After September 29, 2023, your WWN connections will stop working even if you choose not to migrate your Nest account to a Google Account. We recommend reading this entire article and the FAQs about accounts for the Nest app before you migrate your Nest Account and associated data to a Google Account. Once your Nest Account is migrated to a Google Account, Routines can be created from the Google Home or Assistant apps with other smart home partner products you already own.

We're committed to minimizing disruptions during this transition. Here's our plan:

  • In order to use Works with Google Home (WWGH), you’ll have to migrate your Nest Account to a Google Account. Migration is not reversible.
  •  If you migrate your Nest account you will have access to new features that will be available with a Google Account, the Google Home app, and the WWGH program
  • If you choose to migrate your account, all WWN device connections you have today will no longer work after migration.
  • After September 29, 2023, your existing WWN device connections will stop working with your Nest Account and Nest app, if you choose not to migrate your account.

Once migrated, you will need to add and connect the WWGH partner devices using the Google Home app and set up new Assistant Routines that allow you to customize how your smart devices work together based on simple triggers – such as when you’re leaving home or going to bed.

Create automations with the script editor

The script editor uses the power of Google intelligence to help you build a personalized smart home ecosystem and make any home automation possible by easily creating and editing scripted automations. To create or edit more advanced automations, the script editor for Google Home (available 2023 to Public Preview) gives you access to the most starters and actions and all traits that Google products and 3rd party devices support.
Advanced logic such as multiple triggers and Boolean conditions enable you to orchestrate your smart home devices beyond what is currently available in the app. The script editor has more than 100 new features to fit your unique understanding of your home and what you want it to do.

Switch to the Google Home Alexa skill

The Google Nest skill for Alexa works with the Google Home app and replaces the current Works with Nest skill for Alexa, which will be turned off on September 29, 2023. The Google Nest skill lets you control your Nest thermostat and view your Nest camera livestream with Alexa.

The Google Nest skill for Alexa and other partner ecosystem integrations will only work with migrated Google Accounts.

There are a few things you should keep in mind regarding Works with Nest, your Nest Account migration, and relinking Nest devices with approved ecosystem partners after migration:

  • You will need to migrate your Nest account to a Google account to use the Google Nest skill for Alexa. When you migrate your account, you will be required to disconnect your current Alexa connection with Nest (this is not reversible).
  • After migrating to Google, you will need to relink your Alexa connection

To relink Alexa:

  1. Delete the existing Nest Skill from your Alexa account.
  2. On your mobile device, open Google Home Home.
  3. Tap your initial in the upper right corner and then Home app settings and then Amazon Alexa skill.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to enable the skill in the Alexa app.

Switch to the latest Google Nest skill for Alexa

The latest Google Nest skill for Alexa works with the Google Home app and replaces the current Alexa skill running over Works with Nest, which will also be turned off on September 29, 2023.

  • You will need to migrate your Nest account to a Google account to use the latest Google Nest skill for Alexa. When you migrate your account, you will be required to disconnect your current Alexa connection with Nest (this is not reversible).
  • After migrating to Google, you will need to relink your Alexa connection

Disable the old Nest Alexa skill

  1. Open the Alexa app with your Alexa account.
  2. Tap More, and select Skills & Games and scroll down to Your skills.
  3. Find the Nest Alexa skill and disable it.
  4. Remove all Nest Devices manually from the Alexa app.

Enable the new Google Nest Alexa skill from the Google Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app Home with your Google account.
  2. Choose Settings at the bottom of the screen and tap + Add
  3. Choose Service Amazon Alexa skill.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to enable the skill in the Alexa app.

Enable the new Google Nest Alexa skill from the Alexa app

Alternatively, you can manually enable the Alexa skill from the Alexa App.

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap More and select Skills & Games.
  3. Find the Google Nest Alexa skill.
  4. Select Enable skill and follow the linking instructions.

Other WWN partner connections

  • If you have any other existing Works with Nest partner connections, you can migrate to a Google Account, but you must remove and disconnect your existing Works with Nest connections. This is not reversible, and after September 29, 2023, these connections will no longer work.
  • After moving to a Google Account, you can explore alternative connections available to you with the Works with Google Home platform.
    • Because Works with Google Home functions differently, the way your Nest and third-party smart home products work together will be different.
    • All triggered routines of Nest, Google, and partner devices will be set up and managed from the Google Home app using Routines or the upcoming script editor.
    • Some of your existing devices and connections may not be supported by Works with Google Home. Check your device’s app to see if it works with Google.
One of the most popular Works with Nest features is to automatically trigger routines based on Nest’s Home/Away status. Works with Google Home already works with many partners and devices, and integrates seamlessly with Routines. Routines allow anyone to quickly customize how their smart devices work together based on simple triggers – whether you’re leaving home or going to bed.

Nest and Google Assistant migration

We’ve streamlined migration of existing Nest devices already connected with the Google Assistant and the Home app. When migrating your Nest Account, just choose the same Google Account you are using for the Google Assistant.

Your Google Assistant and any Nest device connection you may have set up previously will continue to work as they did before migration. All your existing Nest device names, home and room assignments, and Assistant Routines are all retained and will continue after account migration.

If you have enabled data access for any third party connections, you can choose which data you share with Google Nest partners by using our Partner Connections tool.

What is Works with Nest?

Your Nest products use sensors and algorithms to learn about you and
anticipate your needs. With Works with Nest, other products around your
home can take what Nest knows and personalize your experience even
more. Once you connect a product to Nest, it can automatically start doing
things for you, without you having to program it.

The more products you have in your home, the more your home can start to
take care of things for you automatically.

Here are a couple examples of Works with Nest connections and what they can do.

When it works with Nest, it just works.

Note: In the examples below, you'll need to have an active account in the Nest app, your home will need to have working Wi-Fi internet service, and your Nest products and your other products must be connected to Wi-Fi.

Example: When everyone's away from home (Home/Away/Assist)

Your Works with Nest products can do the right thing automatically based on whether you're home or away. We call this Home/Away Assist. For example, when you're away, your Works with nest products can do things like:

  • Automatically turn on smart lighting systems to make it look like somebody's home.
  • Switch your smart water heater to an energy efficient mode.
  • Close your motorized window shades to help keep your home comfortable and secure.
  • Send a notification if your connected stove or oven is still on, with an option to turn it off.

For more information about Home/Away Assist, visit the following articles:

Learn about Home/Away Assist

How Home/Away Assist decides to switch your home to Home or Away

Example: When Nest Protect is sounding an alarm

When your Google Nest Protect smoke and CO alarm notices high levels of smoke or CO and triggers an alarm, the Works with Nest connection can do things like:

  • Flash your smart lighting system to help alert your family to the alarm.
  • Turn on your connected yard irrigation system to help prevent the spread of a fire.
  • Tell your connected phone system to call you from home.

Our list of Works with Nest partners is growing. You might even own a product or two that works with nest already. Look for the Works with Nest badge on your product's packaging.

What you need to use a Works with Nest connection

Work with Nest connections require a Nest Account to be set up prior to August 19, 2019. These connections will stop working if you migrate your Nest Account to a Google Account.

(1) New Works with Nest connections cannot be set up after August 31, 2019, but your existing connections will continue to work with your Nest Account.

(2) Generally speaking, you only need one Nest product already added to your account in the Nest app and another third-party app or device to use a WWN connection. However, each WWN connection has different requirements.

For instance, you’ll need a Nest Protect to use a WWN connection that makes your Wi-Fi lighting system flash when carbon monoxide or smoke is detected.

You’ll also need a third-party device that you’ll connect your Nest products to. This could be anything from remote controlled lights to a fitness tracker.

If you are sharing access to your Nest home with Family Accounts, keep in mind that both the owner of the Nest home and anybody with shared access can set up a WWN connection. After the WWN connection is set up, everybody in the Nest home can also use, manage, or remove the WWN connection. For more information about what people can do when you invite them to share access to your Nest home, see the following article:

How to set up a Works with Nest connection

Works with Nest connections require a Nest Account to be set up prior to August 19, 2019. New Works with Nest connections cannot be set up after August 31, 2019, but your existing connections will continue to work with your Nest Account.

To set up a new Works with Nest connection, follow the instructions on the Works with Nest developers’ websites and on product packaging (look for the Works with Nest logo). Setup is done securely without any personal information (such as your email address) exchanged between Nest and the Works with Nest connection developer. To start, use the Works with Nest partner app or website to initiate the OAuth process and grant permission for the connection to access Nest device data. Once authorized, your Works with Nest connection will be automatically enabled.

How to check and manage your Works with Nest connections

You can easily view basic information about your Works with Nest (WWN) connections, see when they were last used, and review the permissions you granted to access your data in the Nest app.

  1. On the Nest app home screen, tap Settings Nest settings icon.
  2. Tap Works with Nest Works with nest icon.
  3. Here you can see all of the WWN connections that you currently have set up. To see more detailed information, click or tap on a connection you want to view.
  4. You'll see the permissions you've granted to the connection so it can access data from your Nest products.

Next to Last used, you’ll see the last time a WWN connection was active. This is helpful if you want to make sure the connection is working and can help with troubleshooting.

Keep in mind, both the Owner of the Nest home and anybody with shared access can set up, use, manage, and remove WWN connections. So if you’ve invited anybody to share access to your home, you may also see their activity here.

If you have trouble getting your WWN connection to work, visit the following article:

  2. Select Works with Nest Works with nest icon.
  3. Pick the Works with Nest connection you want to remove from the list.
  4. Tap Remove connection at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Next, confirm your choice.

Note: If you have more than one home in your account, and the connection is active in both, you’ll also need to choose whether you want to remove it for the other home as well.

To switch to another home, tap the Menu  icon on the app home screen, then select the home you want at the bottom of the screen.

We take your privacy seriously

No matter which Works with Nest connections you use, you’re in control over what data is shared. You’ll always know what will be shared before you choose to grant access to your data. And if you ever change your mind, you can always choose to remove a connection.

Every Works with Nest developer that we work with is also required to follow a list of guidelines that limit how it can use the information you’ve agreed to share. No personally identifiable information – such as your email address – is shared by Nest. Depending on the connection, it may request access to basic home and device data such as HVAC system specs, smoke and CO status, Home and Away states, or Rush Hour Reward events.
