Learn about the Spaces view in the Nest app and how to change the settings

Nest no longer supports Nest Secure. It will not be accessible in the Nest app and will no longer connect to the internet. You cannot use the Nest app to check the status of your Nest Secure, control your Nest Secure devices, or receive notifications from your alarm system.

For more information, go to this Community Forum post.

The Spaces view is automatically enabled if you have at least one camera in the Nest app. If you don’t have any cameras added to the Nest app, you can manually turn on Spaces to see your Nest products organized room by room on the Nest app’s home screen. The product icons on the app home screen are “live,” meaning they show their current status such as your thermostat’s target temperature.

The Spaces view is especially useful if you have multiple Nest products in one or more rooms of your home.

At the top of the screen, you’ll see the home icon with your address and the mode your home is in below it. To manually switch to either Home or Away modes, just tap the icon.

Next, you’ll see rooms with cameras listed first in alphabetical order (bedroom, kitchen, living room, etc.). If you have more than one camera in a room, you’ll see the cameras grouped together in that location.

Rooms that don’t have cameras, but have Google Nest thermostats or Google Nest Protects, will be listed next in alphabetical order.

How to turn Spaces view on or off

If you only have a few Nest products, or you simply prefer to see them all organized individually instead of by room, you can easily turn off Spaces and go back to the “traditional” Nest app homepage layout. Or if you don’t have a camera and want to enable Spaces, here’s how to do it manually.

  1. On the Nest app home screen, tap Settings Nest settings icon.
  2. Tap Spaces and then tap the switch to turn it on or off.

Note: Changing this setting will only affect your view. It won’t change the view for anyone else who shares access to the same home with the Nest app.

Spaces live camera view

Spaces also lets you easily check the video streams of all the
cameras you have. When your phone, tablet or computer is
connected to Wi-Fi, you’ll see live video streams. If you’re on
a cellular connection, you’ll see a snapshot that updates every 20 seconds.

You can also manually switch your camera on or off.

  1. Select your camera
  2. Tap Settings Nest settings icon.
  3. Tap Camera On/Off. In the Spaces view, you can turn your
camera on by tapping the switch in the video stream under
    “Your camera is off.”

Note: If your camera is offline, the video stream will not stream
or record video, and the switch will be grayed out and disabled.
You’ll also see an offline status message.

How to change Nest product locations with the app

If you didn’t give one or more of your Nest products a room name during setup, they’ll be grouped together at the top of Spaces in “Unassigned.” You might also have Nest products grouped together in a space, even though they’re actually in different rooms in your home. For instance, this can happen if you assigned them all the location "Bedroom" in the app even though they’re installed in different bedrooms.

Labels don’t affect which space Nest products appear in. So if you have Nest Protects in different bedrooms with labels, for instance Bedroom (John) and Bedroom (Mary), they’ll both be grouped in the Bedroom space.

If anything is out of place in the Spaces view, you can easily change your Nest product locations with the Nest app so they’ll appear grouped in the right space. For detailed instructions, please see the following article about changing the location name for your Nest product:
