A restart can fix some common issues. Reset your thermostat to clear your personal settings. If you need more help, or if a restart doesn’t fix the issue, go to our thermostat troubleshooter.
When you restart your thermostat:

It keeps all your settings, like when you restart a computer or phone.

This helps if your thermostat is stuck or frozen, can’t connect to the internet, or doesn’t work properly.
When you reset your thermostat

It erases some or all of its info, based on what you choose. It goes back to the default factory settings.

This is useful if you move, or want to leave your thermostat behind and you want to remove all your personal information.
Reset or restart your thermostat
Important: Before you reset your thermostat, write down the wire setup. On your thermostat, go to Settings
Equipment. Make sure to save a copy of the other settings, like your system heating type or safety temperature.
Nest Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)
Go to Settings
Restart
or Factory Reset
.
Confirm that you want to reset your device or do a reset. Your thermostat will take a few moments to restart or reset.

A factory reset removes all your personal settings and restores the thermostat to default settings. After you reset your thermostat, you'll need to set it up and add it to your home in the app again.
To unlink your thermostat from your account, go to Settings
Account
Disconnect. This removes your thermostat from the Home app. You can't change its settings in the app when you unlink your device.
Nest Thermostat E or Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen or earlier)
Go to Settings
Reset, then choose one of these options:

Restart your thermostat |

Restart |
If you restart, your thermostat won't lose any of your information or settings, similar to a computer or phone. When it turns back on, you can continue to use it. If it doesn't fix the issue, use our thermostat troubleshooter for more help. |

Reset all or some of your thermostat's information |

Schedule |
This option clears your entire temperature schedule. Use this option if you want your thermostat to learn a new schedule. Any setpoints that your thermostat learned, or you set will be erased. You'll need to create a new schedule from scratch, or wait while your thermostat learns your new schedule. Tip: If you have a Nest Thermostat E and turned off Auto-Schedule, you can pick an empty schedule or a Basic Schedule. A Basic Schedule is a common schedule based on a national average that saves energy and keeps you comfortable. |

Home/Away |
Your thermostat learns when you are home or away to save energy (Eco Temperature). If you reset Home/Away, it forgets when you’re home or away. Use this if you move your thermostat to a new location in your home, or remodeled your home. It will learn its new location in a few days. Tip: Turn on your phone location to help your thermostat know if you are home or away. |

Account connection |
Important: This option is not available on all thermostats. This will unlink your account from the thermostat. After this, you'll still find your thermostat in the app. But it will be listed as "offline" and you'll no longer be able to control it with the app. To remove it from your account and app, go to your thermostat's settings. Tip: If you move and leave your thermostat behind and want to use this option, reset the temperature schedule. This lets the new owners control the system, and the thermostat to learn their schedule. |

Network |
Important: This option is not available on all thermostats. This erases all network information from your thermostat. Your device will no longer be online and will forget the WI-Fi credentials. To connect your thermostat back to the internet, select Settings |

All Settings |
Important: Remove your thermostat from your account in the app before you reset it. This removes all your personal settings and restores your thermostat to factory default settings. Learn how to remove a product from your account. After you reset your thermostat, you need to set it up and add it to your home in the app again just like you did when you first installed it. Learn how to add your Nest thermostat to the Nest app. Your thermostat will need time to learn about you and your home before it sets your schedule and activates its energy saving features. Manual restart
Important: If you manually restart your thermostat, you could lose any unsaved information.
Perform a manual restart only if your thermostat is stuck or frozen, and you can't restart your thermostat through the menu.
Nest Thermostat

Take your thermostat off its base.

Take out both AAA batteries.

Put the batteries back in then press your thermostat onto the base until it clicks into place.

Your thermostat will take a few moments to turn on and restart.

Press the thermostat down until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds).

Press and release the ring to turn the screen back on and complete the restart process.
