Time-of-use energy rates and Nest Renew

Nest Renew¹ can use your Nest thermostat to prioritize² cooling or heating when it’s less expensive³, if you have an electric cooling, electric heating, or solar panels, and time-of-use (TOU) peak pricing from your energy provider.

When demand for electricity is especially high this is called a peak period. For instance, summer peak times are usually mid-to-late afternoon, when businesses still have cooling on and people are arriving home and turning on the air conditioner.

Some utilities use peak pricing to incentivize customers to use less energy during these peak periods. These pricing programs have many variants and names, such as time-of-use (TOU) or peak time savings. The most common type is a TOU rate, which means customers pay more for the electricity they use during peak times.

Nest Renew can save money with TOU rates

Check with your energy provider to understand the specific times and rates for your TOU plan. You can also track your energy savings in the monthly Nest Home Report and compare them to your energy bill.
