How to update Wi-Fi settings on a Nest thermostat

If you change your router’s settings, Wi-Fi password, or install a new router, you’ll need to update the Wi-Fi information on the Google Nest thermostat to make sure it can still connect to internet.

Try using the same network name and password

The simplest fix for most Nest products is to update your home network so that the network name (SSID) and password are the same as before. This will usually work even if you’ve purchased a new Wi-Fi router as long as the manufacturer settings are the same.

If this doesn’t work, or you want to keep your new network name or password, you’ll need to update the Wi-Fi details on each of your Nest products.

You’ll need access to your Nest thermostat to update the network and password. You can’t update Wi-Fi information with the app.

Important: After changing router settings, if you do not remove the current Wi-Fi information on your thermostat (see below), you will see your Wi-Fi network name listed twice, one with a star next to the name. Connect to the network name without the star. The network with your old settings is the one with the star next to it; this network should disappear once you reset your thermostat’s Wi-Fi information.

Remove the current Wi-Fi information on your thermostat

  1. Press the thermostat ring to bring up the Quick View menu.
  2. Select Settings Nest settings icon.
  3. Turn the ring and select Reset.
  4. Select Network.
  5. Select Reset to confirm.

Sign in to your Wi-Fi network

  1. Press the thermostat ring to bring up the Quick View menu.
  2. Select Settings Nest settings icon.
  3. Turn the ring and Select Network.
  4. Select the new Wi-Fi network name and enter the new password. It may take a few moments for your network to appear.

Thermostat troubleshooting

If your network name doesn’t appear in the list of Wi-Fi networks, wait a few minutes while your thermostat scans for networks. If your thermostat can’t find your new network to connect, your new router may have settings that are not compatible with the Nest thermostat.
