Set up and control C by GE smart light bulbs

Note: This article applies to C by GE bulbs only.

For information on setting up and controlling bulbs from other manufacturers or a C by GE smart switch, please see our smart device control page and our smart device setup page.

Google Home allows you to turn your C by GE Smart Bulbs on and off and control brightness remotely by using voice commands, the Google Home app, or a visual display like the Google Home Hub. All C by GE bulbs, including Soft White and Tunable White bulbs, can be paired with Google Home. You can connect up to 6 C by GE bulbs with each Google Home device.

Set up your C by GE bulbs

Set up C by GE bulbs in the Google Home app

If your C by GE bulbs aren’t set up in the C by GE app, you can set them up in the Google Home app.

  1. Plug in and turn on your bulbs in the same room as your Google Home device.

  2. Set up your Google Home device if you haven’t already.

  3. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.

  4. From Home tap Add Set up device Set up new devices in your home. (Don’t tap the link under Works with Google.)

  5. Choose a home to set up the light bulb in and tap Next.

  6. Your Google Home app will start scanning for nearby devices that are ready for setup.

  7. Tap Set up some smart lights.

  8. Select the light bulbs you’d like to set up. Your bulbs will blink when selected.

  9. Room Selection: Choose what room your bulb is in.

    • You can create a custom room by tapping Add custom room type in room name Tap Next.

  10. Name your smart bulb: Type in the desired name for your bulb that you will use for voice commands. We recommend using a contextual name like “reading light” or “overhead light.” For best results, don’t include the room name in the light’s name (we already know which room it’s in).

  11. Your light bulbs may receive an update and blink a few times. Tap Got it.

  12. Your devices are ready: Tap Continue.

  13. Setup is successful. You’re all done! You can now control your lights with Google Home.

Note: The bulb may blink during its first firmware update after being set up with the Google Home App.

Move C by GE bulbs from the C by GE app to the Google Home app

To move bulbs from the C by GE app, delete the bulbs from the C by GE app and set them up in the Google Home app.

  1. Turn on your C by GE lights. The bulbs must be turned on before you continue.

  2. Delete the bulbs from the C by GE app. This will factory reset the bulbs. They will blink 3 times if the factory reset is successful. If they don’t blink, you will need to factory reset each bulb manually. Note that the reset sequence is different depending on your bulbs’ firmware version. If the first reset sequence doesn’t work, you have an older firmware version and will need to use the second reset sequence.

  3. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.

  4. From Home tap Add Set up device Set up new devices in your home. (Don’t tap the link under Works with Google.)

  5. Choose a home to set up the light bulb in and tap Next.

  6. Your Google Home will start scanning for nearby devices that are ready for setup.

Control your lights with Google Home

To do this: Say "Hey Google" or “Ok Google," then...
To turn on/off a specific light (e.g. “desk light”) "Turn off the desk light”
Dim lights "Dim the desk light" or “Dim all the lights”
Brighten lights "Brighten the desk light"
Set a light brightness to a certain percentage "Set desk light to 50%" or “Set lights to 70%”
Dim/Brighten lights by a certain percentage “Dim/Brighten lamp by 50%" or “Dim/Brighten lights by 10%
Turn on/off all lights “Turn on/off all of the lights”
Set Tunable White bulbs to Vibrant or wake color "Set lights to bright white"
Set Tunable White bulbs to Active or everyday color "Set lights to soft white"
Set Tunable White bulbs to Calm or sleep color  "Set lights to candlelight"
Change the color temperature of Tunable White bulbs "Change lights to 2700 kelvin"  (2000-7000 range)

Note: When your Google Home and lights are in the same room, Google Home will know your voice commands are for the lights in that room. For example, if your Google Home and smart bulbs are in the living room, and you say “OK Google, turn off the lights,” then the living room lights will turn off.

Other ways to control your lights

  • You can turn your lights on and off from the Google Home app. You can also change the Tunable White color temperature.
  • To control your lights and other smart devices with just one voice command, you can set a routine.

Set a nickname for your light

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. In the Home tab, tap Settings.
  3. Choose the room your light bulb is in.
  4. Select the light bulb you want to nickname.
  5. Tap Name.
  6. Edit the device name and then tap Save.

Tip: Google Home already knows the room it’s in, so your voice commands will be more clear if you use a contextual name like “overhead light” or “reading light.”

Unlink your bulb(s) from Google Home

Note: You cannot unlink individual C by GE smart lights. Removing one bulb through the “Unlink C by GE” flow removes all C by GE light bulbs.

  1. Make sure your bulb(s) are powered ON
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. In the Home tab, tap SettingsSettings.
  4. Choose a room a C by Ge light bulb is in.
  5. Select a C by GE light bulb.
  6. Tap Unlink C by GE and then Unlink (this will remove all your GE bulbs. We don’t currently support removing individual C by GE light bulbs)

If the Google Home app is not finding your bulb during set up

Note: If your bulbs don’t show up in either the Google Home app or the C by GE app, they probably need to be factory reset. They might also use older firmware, so follow the second factory reset sequence if the first sequence doesn’t work.

If your bulb is not responding

  • Make sure the outlet is receiving power. Check that your wall switch is on.
  • Turn the bulb off and on. The bulb takes up to one minute after receiving power to reconnect to the Google Home device. Try your light and see if it works! If so, you’re done.
  • Try using the bulb in a different lamp/socket.
  • If the above steps don’t work, you may need to factory reset your C by GE bulb and set up the bulb again.

If you get the error message “Something went wrong”

  • The signal between your bulb and your Google Home might not be strong enough. To increase the signal strength, move the bulb and Google Home closer to each other. They should be no more than 15 feet apart.
  • You might not be a member of the home that the bulb was set up in. Ask the person who created the home to add you as a member.
  • Other devices near your Google Home or C by GE bulbs might cause interference. If you have a nearby Wi-Fi router, cordless phone, microwave, or Bluetooth speaker, move it further away if you can.
  • You might have too many C by GE bulbs on one Google Home. You can add up to 6 bulbs on each Google Home.

If you are still unable to resolve the issue, share feedback about Google Home.

Factory reset your C by GE bulbs

  1. Make sure all your bulbs are turned on.

  2. Factory reset your bulbs. Note that the reset sequence is different depending on your bulbs’ firmware version. If your bulbs don’t flash on and off three times after you finish the first reset sequence, you will need to use the second reset sequence.

  3. Reboot the Google Home you are using to set up your bulbs. Then attempt to re-setup your bulbs using the Google Home app.

Note: If your bulbs are connected to the C by GE app, you can also factory reset your bulbs by unlinking them from the C by GE app. The bulbs will blink 3 times when unlinked from the app. This confirms the factory reset was successful.

If you want to set up a C by GE smart switch

Follow the setup steps to set up smart home devices. C by GE switches use different setup steps than the bulbs. After you open the Google Home appGoogle Home app and tap Add Set up device, you will need to tap Have something already set up? under Works with Google.
