Multiple devices respond to "Hey Google"

If you say “Hey Google” near two or more devices, such as your Google Nest or Home device and your Pixel Tablet or phone, multiple devices might turn on. Only one of the devices should respond.

Google selects the best device to respond to based on various factors, such as:

  • Proximity of the device
  • Type of request
  • Capabilities of the device

Step 1: Update your Google app version

  1. On your phone or Assistant-enabled Tablet, open the Google app Search Icon.
  2. Tap your profile and then Settings  and then About.
  3. Check the version number.
    1. If your version is below 6.5, go to the Google app page.
    2. Tap Update.

Step 2: Add the same account to both devices

Important: If the phone that responds isn't yours, then these steps won’t fix the issue.

If you have multiple Google Accounts, add the account you used to set up Google Home to your device. 

Step 1: Check which account you use on Google Home
  1. On your Assistant-enabled device, open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold the screen on your device.
  3. At the top right, tap Device settings  and then Recognition & sharing and then Linked account(s).
  4. Check the Google Accounts linked to this specific device.
Step 2: Add the account to your device
  1. On your device, open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. At the top, tap your Profile picture or initial.
  3. On the right of your email, tap the Down arrow Down Arrow and then Add another account.
  4. To add your account, follow the steps.
    • After you add the account, you don’t need to stay signed in.

  2. At the bottom right of the Home screen, tap More More and then Send feedback.
  3. Enter information about your issue.
