Migrate devices to the Google Home app

Important: You can only migrate to the Google Home app if you’re in the Public preview program and you have a Nest Cam Indoor or Nest Cam Outdoor.

When you migrate your camera from the Nest app to the Google Home app, you'll be able to view and control that device in one app with your other Home app devices. Your settings, schedules, and notifications settings will automatically transfer to the Home app. 

  • While most features are available in the Home app, some features are only available in the Nest app. 
  • If you decide that you don't want your camera in the Home app, you can switch back to the Nest app.

If you have a Nest account, and no Google Account, you'll need to migrate your Nest account to a Google Account to be able to transfer your camera to the Home app.

Migrate cameras with a Nest Aware subscription

To migrate to the Home app, your camera must either have no subscription, or a Nest Aware or Nest Aware Plus subscription that covers all devices in your home for one price.

1st gen Nest Aware subscriptions (one subscription per camera) are not supported in the Home app. To migrate a device with this type of subscription, you can upgrade to the latest Nest Aware subscription  that covers all the devices in your home for one price, or cancel your subscription.

Important: If you upgrade to a Nest Aware or Nest Aware Plus subscription, you won't be able to switch back to a 1st gen subscription.

Nest app only features

The Home app has most of the same camera and doorbell features as the Nest app. But the following features aren't available. These features are only available in the Nest app and will be accessible if you migrate your camera or doorbell back to the Nest app.

  • Change wifi without resetting the device
  • Talk and Listen Tone setting
  • Save camera clip to Nest library
  • Social sharing of a saved camera clip
  • Public livestream sharing
  • Password protected livestream sharing
  • Email notifications
  • Assistant on device
  • Zoom & Enhance
  • Adjustable microphone sensitivity
  • Safety clip 
  • Timelapses
  • Auto track zoom

Transfer to the Google Home app

You'll receive reminders that you can migrate a product from the Home app, just tap the notification to start. You can also start the transfer in the device settings. When you transfer your device to the Home app, please be aware that:

  • Any camera history in the Nest app will be accessible in the Nest app until it expires. All your new camera history will now be stored and accessible in the Home app. 
  • After you've transferred your device, live video will only be available in the Google Home app and Google Home for web.
  • Your camera settings, activity zones, notifications settings, and schedules will be automatically transferred. Presence sensing will need to be set up again.

Transferring to the Home app requires a software update and may take up to 25 minutes. You'll receive a notification in the Google Home app when it's done.

Before you begin, check the following:

  • You are the owner of the home in the Nest app.
  • You have a Google Account or have migrated your Nest Account.
  • You've installed the latest update for the Home app and your phone's OS.

Transfer device

  1. Open the Nest app and tap on your device.
  2. Then select Settings Nest settings icon Transfer to Home app.
  • If you don't see this option, your device isn't eligible to transfer to the Home app.
  1. Review the info on the next page and click Continue.
  2. On the following page, you'll learn about what you can expect to happen when you transfer to the Home app. When you're ready, tap Transfer.
  3. Select the device you want to move and tap Transfer.
  4. Follow the remaining instructions in the app to complete the transfer.

Go back to the Nest app

If you find you prefer using the Nest app, you can transfer back. If you do, please be aware of the following:

  • Any history your device made in the Home app will stay in the Home app until it expires. This includes video history for all cameras.
  • All your device history will be accessed with the Nest app going forward. 
  • You'll need to set up notifications in the Nest app again. They won't be imported from the Home app.
  • You may want to review any routines you have set up for that device in the Home app as they may interfere with Schedules in the Nest app.

Transfer device

  1. In the device settings in the Nest app, tap Transfer from the Home app.
  2. On the confirmation page, tap Continue.
  3. On the About page, tap Transfer.
  4. On the next page, tap Ok to return to the home page.

Troubleshoot transfer issues

If you don't see your camera in the Nest app after you've transferred it back from the Home app, you'll need to set it up again. Follow these Instructions to set up your camera in the Nest app.

  1. Open the Nest app Nest app.
    • Note: If you have more than one home in your account, make sure that you first selected the Nest home where you want to install your camera. Tap Menu  in the top left of the home screen to change homes.
  2. In the top right corner of the app home screen, tap Settings Nest settings icon.
  3. Select Add product plus.
  4. Scan the QR code on the back of your camera. You can also tap Continue without scanning and type the numbers at the top of the QR code.
  5. The app walks you through setup and installation.
