  • “Add account to check for updates”

Select the message that appears on your thermostat below for some basic steps to troubleshoot when your Nest Thermostat can’t update its software.

How to tell which thermostat you have

“Unable to check”

This means there may be a temporary issue with the Nest service. You can manually check for service issues here. If there is an issue, simply wait a while and try again when the issue is resolved.

“No network”

This means that your thermostat isn’t connected to a Wi-Fi network.

  1. On your thermostat, go to Settings  And then Network. If it says it's not connected to an account, remove your thermostat from the Home app.
  2. Open the Home app and tap your thermostat on the home screen. Then, select Settings And then Remove device.
  3. Begin thermostat setup with the Home app again. On the home screen, tap + then Set up a Nest product.
  4. Follow the app instructions, scan the QR code on your thermostat and select Already installed to skip installation and wiring instructions. The app will then connect your thermostat to your account and may ask you to select some additional options like your preferred temperatures.

“Add account to check for updates”

If your thermostat isn’t connected to a Google Account, it can’t download updates. Someone may have manually disconnected the account in the thermostat settings, or there could be another issue.

  1. On your thermostat, go to Settings  And then Account. If it’s not connected to an account, remove your thermostat from the Home app.
  2. Open the Home app and tap your thermostat on the home screen. Then, select Settings And then Remove device.
  3. Begin thermostat setup with the Home app again. On the home screen, tap + then Set up a Nest product.
  4. Follow the app instructions, scan the QR code on your thermostat, and select Already installed to skip installation and wiring instructions. The app will then connect your thermostat to your account, and may ask you to select some additional options like your preferred temperatures.
