Nest thermostats update automatically when connected to the internet through Wi-Fi. If your Google Nest thermostat stalls, freezes, or gets stuck for more than 15 minutes during a software update, restarting your thermostat should let it finish. The Nest Thermostat will typically show "g.co/nest/m21" if there is another software update problem.
Depending on your model, you can confirm the software version in the Home app, in the Nest app, or on the thermostat itself.
Important: Some software updates may take a few weeks to make it to all Nest thermostats that are connected to Wi-Fi.
Nest Thermostat software update error messages
If your Nest Thermostat is unable to update its software, it should show one of the following messages:
- "Unable to check"
- "No network"
- "Add account to check for updates"
Note: These errors only apply to the Nest Thermostat. Check which thermostat you have. Nest thermostat software history contains notes about the latest version of thermostat software.
"Unable to check"
"No network"
This means that your thermostat isn’t connected to a Wi-Fi network.
- On your thermostat, go to Settings Network. If it's not connected to an account, remove your thermostat from the Home app.
- Open the Google Home app
- Tap Favorites or Devices
- Touch and hold your thermostat's tile Settings Remove device.
- Begin thermostat setup with the Home app again. On the home screen, tap Add then Set up a Nest product.
- Follow the app instructions, scan the QR code on your thermostat and select Already installed to skip installation and wiring instructions. The app will then connect your thermostat to your account and may ask you to select some additional options like your preferred temperatures.
"Add account to check for updates"
If your thermostat isn’t connected to a Google Account, it can’t download updates. Someone may have manually disconnected the account in the thermostat settings, or there could be another issue.
- On your thermostat, go to Settings Account. If it’s not connected to an account, remove your thermostat from the Home app.
- Open the Google Home app
- Tap Favorites or Devices
- Touch and hold your thermostat's tile Settings Remove device.
- Begin thermostat setup with the Home app again. On the home screen, tap Add then Set up a Nest product.
- Follow the app instructions, scan the QR code on your thermostat, and select Already installed to skip installation and wiring instructions. The app will then connect your thermostat to your account, and may ask you to select some additional options like your preferred temperatures.
