Can’t link additional people to Google Home

Up to 6 people can link their Google Account & voice to a single Google Home. The maximum has been reached on this particular Google Home. To link your Google Account and voice, complete one of the options below.

Option 1. Unlink a single Google Account & voice

Step 1. Find linked Google Accounts

You'll need to ask the owner of one of the linked Google Accounts to unlink their Google Account and voice. To find which accounts are linked, 

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Make sure your phone or tablet is on the same Wi-Fi network as Google Home.
  3. In the top right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Google Home devices. 
  4. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home for which you're checking to see with Google Accounts are linked.
  5. In the top right corner of the device card, tap the device card menu More menu iconand thenSettings.
  6. Underneath "Linked accounts(s)", you'll see the Google Accounts that are linked to this specific Google Home device. 
Step 2. Google Account owner unlinks their Google Account

The owner of the Google Account that is being unlinked needs to follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as Google Home. 
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. In the top left corner of the app Home screen, tap Menu  and thenMore settings.
  4. Under "Account," tap Shared devices. 
  5. Tap the X next to the device(s) you want to unlink from your Google Account & voice. Tap UNLINK. 
  6. You'll see confirmation that your Google Account & voice have been unlinked from that device. 
Step 3. Link your Google Account & voice to Google Home
  1. Open the Google Home app .
    1. Make sure the Google Home app is updated with the latest version.
  2. Make sure your phone or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as Google Home.
  3. Tap Menu  and make sure the Google Account listed is the one you want to link to your voice. To switch accounts, click the triangle next to the Account name and choose the correct Account. 
  4. In the top right corner of the app Home screen, tap Devices . Find the device card of the Google Home you'd like to link to your voice. 
  5. From the device card, tap the blue banner labeled Multi user is now available or Link your account.
  6. Tap CONTINUE. 
  7. If you haven’t already agreed to what is required to get help from your Assistant, you’ll see a screen outlining the permissions. Tap YES I’M IN. 
  8. Follow the prompts to teach Google Home to recognize your voice. You'll say "Ok Google” twice and “Hey Google” twice. Note: This turns on Personal results.
  9. To test a few phrases, say something like, “Ok Google, tell me about my day.” Tap CONTINUE. 
  10. To invite other people to link their Google Account & voice for tailored results, tap INVITE, choose your communication method, and send the invite. To skip this step, tap No thanks.
  11. You'll see a list of devices you've linked to your voice. These devices will read personal info when they hear your voice. If your Assistant isn’t recognizing your voice correctly, tap Teach it your voice again to try again. 

Option 2. Unlink all Google Accounts & voices from Google Home

Important: This options removes all Google Accounts from this Google Home. Please be sure to check with other linked account owners before doing this. You'll need to set up Google Home again.

Step 1. Factory Data Reset (FDR) Google Home

Press and hold the microphone mute on the back of Google Home for about 15 seconds. You'll hear your Assistant confirm that it's resetting Google Home.

Note: This resets Google Home to its default factory settings. This action will clear your data and can't be undone. You will have to set up Google Homeand relink any previously linked home control smart devices (thermostats, plugs and switches, lights) again. 

Step 2. Set up Google Home
Follow these steps to set up Google Home. Other people who want to link their account to Google Home will need to re-link their Google Accounts to Google Home. 
Step 3. Teach your Assistant your voice 
  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Tap Menu and make sure the Google Account listed is the one you want to link to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle next to the Account name and choose the correct Account. 
  3. In the top right corner of the app Home screen, tap Devices . Find the device card of the Google Home you'd like to link to your voice. 
  4. From the device card, tap the blue banner labeled “Teach the Assistant your voice.”
  5. If only one supported device is found, tap GET STARTED.  If multiple supported devices are found, tap the checkbox next to the device(s) you want to link to your voice. Tap CONTINUE. 
  6. Read what settings are needed to get help from your Assistant. Tap YES I’M IN. 
  7. Follow the prompts to teach Google Home to recognize your voice. You'll say "Ok Google” twice and “Hey Google” twice. Note: This turns on Personal results.
