Restricted Ads: Third-party consumer technical support
I have a local computer repair and I.T. service company in Superior, WI, and I've been advertising on Google Ad words for some time. We have a brick and mortar store and we are well respected in the community for honest repair service.
Just recently Google has been disapproving our ads that we've been running for years. I understand it is a policy decision, and why they even did it. In fact we have to do the clean up for the majority of those who scam trusting computer users.
Some of the examples listed on Google's policy page include the following below...
Examples (non-exhaustive list): Technical support for troubleshooting, security, virus removal, internet connectivity, online accounts (for example, password resets or login support), or software installation
What I do not like here is the discrimination that is happening here for our industry as there are honest and real company. I'm seeing competitors ads running which has anti-trust concerns which come to mind.
Google shouldn't throw everyone out because of some bad companies. There needs to be some validation process or even requirements. Something we'd gladly do.
This is a bad move in my opinion and needs to be rethought out.

Thanks for the replies.Aside from the trademarks issue, and the comment James mentioned below (see below), I'd like to confirm that there are zero keywords that will be allowed for I.T. services, is that true? Is that what is being stated from Google or is it just specific types of I.T. services? I ask because we offer a number of I.T. related services. Thank you for being there and responding to these questions.
As Moshe has explained, any ads for any IT service is not going to be approved right now. There is nothing anyone can do about it and the time it takes Google Ads to implement changes is on their own clock and not something that can be affected.

If you wish to send your feedback to Google Ads, simply open your Google Ads account, click on the ? in the upper right hand corner and then click on Feedback. This help community does not process feedback or complaints.
Kind Regards,
James

Update:
Google has updated the Other restricted businesses policy on third-party consumer technical support. The update clarifies that we will allow advertising for the sale of consumer technology where the landing page might contain navigational features related to technical support.Diamond Product Expert MosheTLV recommended this

Aneesh,
A common factor I am seeing from the ads that do run, is that tech support is only part of their business, not their main business. I'm guessing some sort of site categorisation is being used for this. Your example is primarily not a tech support site.
This is not the usual way for Google to deal with policy, so I am guessing it is part of some wider change that will include approval of tech sites in the future.

@Aneesh Xavier;
We are not google and we have no control over the methodology the Google applies to enforce the Policy;
Like any large scale detection system, on a global scale, it is not perfect;
So these ads should be reported to be manually reviewed and manually removed.

This topic has been extensively discussed on this community and the old one.
Currently, Google reevaluating this vertical to establish a verification process. It will take time to complete. For now, any IT service is not allowed. This Policy change has been rolling out globally.

I'm glad Google have clarified the policy, as it would have been distressing for many affected to see the ads of big companies still running.
As I said above:
"I have noticed that some large businesses, where tech support is not their primary offering, are still advertising. This seems deliberate on Google's part. They must have decided that the risk from those advertisers is low or non-existent. "

as with any machine man made it requires support, service and repair.
The policy change I will test and install a shop into my site ASAP
Because if you sell it you need to support it right? as per policy change logic.
The irony is that I already sell or procure hardware as do most of us.
If my ads still get disapproved then I will then have solid case for the ACCC.
Interesting times ahead on this one.

I severely doubt changing your website after being disapproved will help. If seen as an attempt to trick Google,. it could lead to a permanent suspension

Saying that though I'm getting ripped off on the CPC.

See the attached images..
IT Support - does not seem to have been impacted as suggested by 'Product Experts'..
Google Support- does not provide any reliable answers or suggestions on what is allowed or not.
What concerns me is the uneven playing filed that Google has created.
It's might be Global - but with the power Google has this is all very amateurish. I am sure they would not accidentally keep missing payments coming to them.

I'm an authorized partner and/or reseller for a variety of software products (as well as equipment).
I decided to "fix" an ad and direct it to a page for the sale of anti-virus / anti-malware software, which last I checked is a consumer technology. As an authorized reseller, these are brand name products I legally sell with the blessing of both (1) my distributors and (2) software publishers. (Note: I did not include the product names in the ad, but the products are on the web page I directed the ad to).
The ad was denied: Disapproved for other restricted business.
This begs the question, what must I do to fall within the framework to sell consumer technology online?
The assumed name (DBA - doing business as) name I use to target the consumer market has the word "repair" in it. Is my legal business name perhaps the problem? What if I attempt to run the same ad with the assumed name I use for the B2B market which doesn't include that word?
Just trying to figure out how I can advertise within the sale of consumer technology framework. As to the remote support scammers, they're still going strong -- we fixed up three consumer clients hit by this scam over this past week.
Thanks!

Hi Steve,
You would want to review and comply with the trademark policy, that also discusses the reseller policy, and then the restricted businesses' policy... oh, and the general polices.
Next, you would want to edit your entire website to make it a non-repair, non-technical support business model. Even then, it may or may not fly with the way the Google Ads systems works.
Hope you find a solution and get your business cranked up.
All the Best,
James

LOL, thanks for the note mate, I enjoyed the chuckle.
I'm lucky in that my business is diversified and most revenue is generated through B2B clients, but the additional business the B2C repair market brings in does make a difference. It's not my top revenue source, but with my business model, B2C does drive B2B and Google Ad's have provided an outstanding CPA in the past.
Other advertisers know this and are targeting repair shops, but the CPA through these other advertising sources is outrageous.
Cheers - Steve
