Hi community.

I am setting up dynamic search auto targets, I find the "categories" option that google provides to be too broad, so I want to use my own URLs with rules.

For the auto targets, should I set these up based on product page URLs or category page URLs? Is there any difference or best practice for this?

I want to include as many products as possible but don't want to lump together into 'all pages'. I'm not really sure if using category page is a good idea, as it's probably best for a user to land on specific product page, is that right?

That’s a good question. 

In my experience of working with hundreds of DSA campaigns by now, there isn’t a rule or strategy that may be perfect for every site. The reason is obvious - the URL structure of every site can be different. 

However, there’s one thing that is advisable for everyone. And that is to make sure that the pages being targeted should be optimised for conversions. The lesser exit points and promising a good user experience. In general, the category pages are not usually optimised for this purpose. On certain sites they simply list an overwhelming number of products without proper filtering options creating the choice paradox problem and on others they simply list thumbnails with clickable links. 

If you believe your category pages are optimised enough, you can experiment including them, else product pages should be the choice.
