Change status with Make multiple changes

The "Make multiple changes" tool enables you to change the status of multiple items at once. If you have a long list of changes, such as updates for your keywords, including additions, removals, and new URLs and CPC bids, you can make all these changes simultaneously.

Here's a sample keyword list, where the first row contains column headers:

Keyword Type Max. CPC Final URL Status
red shoes broad 0.50 http://www.example1.com paused
blue shoes phrase 0.30 http://www.example2.com removed
new shoes exact 0.80 http://www.example3.com enabled

The "Make multiple changes" tool will add keywords that don't yet exist in your account, remove or pause keywords as you specify, and make your requested changes to your keyword match types, bids, and final URLs.

Using the status field

The "Make multiple changes" tool has different requirements for the status field. Here are more details about the status values you can use in each tool.

Keywords: enabled, paused, removed
Placements: enabled, paused, removed

  • You can enter a status of "enabled" to resume a paused keyword or placement. However, keywords and placements can't be resumed once they've been removed. (This is different from ad groups and campaigns, which stay in your account even after they've been removed.)

Negative keywords: removed
Negative sites: removed

  • Ad group negative keywords and sites cannot be paused.
  • You can enter a status of "removed" to remove an existing ad group negative keyword or site. If you specify any other status (such as "enabled" or "paused," the term will be added as a regular (positive) keyword or site instead of a negative.

Campaign negative keywords: enabled or removed
Campaign negative sites: enabled or removed

  • You can enter a status of "removed" to remove an existing campaign negative keyword or site. If you specify any other status ("enabled" or "paused") or don't specify a status, the keyword or site will be added as "enabled."
  • Campaign negative keywords and sites cannot be paused.

Text ads: enabled, paused, removed
Image ads: enabled, paused, removed
Multiple mobile ads: enabled, paused, removed

  • You can resume a paused ad by specifying a status of "enabled."
  • Another ad status you may see in your account is "disapproved." If you enter this status into the tool, it's treated as "enabled." (Note that this doesn't change the approval status of your ad.)
  • If you don't specify a status, the tool looks for a matching ad in your ad group, and uses the status of the matching ad. If no matching ad exists, or if the matching ad is removed, the new ad is treated as "enabled."
