About Smart Display campaigns with Pay for conversions

Smart Display campaigns with Pay for conversions have fewer eligibility requirements and some extra help for you to get the most out of the Display Network. Once your campaign gets enough conversions, it's upgraded automatically into a full SDC campaign.

How does it work?

If you've set up conversion tracking and your account has received at least 5 conversions in the last 30 days*, you'll be eligible to create a Smart Display campaign with Pay for conversions. The budget and Target CPA will be capped until your account reaches 50 conversions in a 30-day period. 

Instructions

  1. Sign in to your Google Ads account.
  2. In the page menu, click Campaigns.
  3. Click the plus button , then select New campaign.
  4. Select Display Network.
  5. Choose Drive action goals.
  6. Select Create a Smart display campaign.
    • You'll see the message 'Pay for conversion, not clicks. Learn more'.
  7. Click Continue.
  8. In the “Bidding” section, find the header “Pay for”, and select Conversions.
  9. Click Save and continue.

Eligibility requirements

  1. Conversion tracking is enabled
  2. Your account has received at least 5 conversions in the last 30 days
    • Note: If your account has more than 50 conversions in the last 30 days, you'll be eligible for a full SDC campaign.
  3. $100 minimum paid bill at the MCC/account level
  4. You're not using offline conversion for importing

CPA limit

You can set a Target CPA of less than $200 USD (or equivalent in local currency) for your Smart Display campaigns with Pay for conversions. If you set a CPA higher than $200 (or equivalent in local currency), you'll see a warning message in the UI and be charged for the higher CPA amount that you set. To help optimise your budget, reduce the Target CPA to below $200 (or equivalent in local currency) for your Smart Display campaigns.

Budget limit

Daily Budget is limited to $200 USD (or equivalent in local currency) for your Smart Display campaign until your account receives 50 conversions in last 30 days.

  1. Why is my campaign bidding strategy status showing 'Eligible (Limited)?'
    • Your Smart Display campaign is running with a limited CPA and budget because your account hasn't received 50 conversions in the last 30 days. You'll be able to adjust to your bids and budget once your account has received 50 conversions in the last 30 days and upgraded into a full SDC campaign.
  2. How can I identify whether I am eligible for Smart Display campaigns with Pay for conversions in Google Ads?
    • You'll see an option to create a Smart Display campaign with the line 'Pay for conversion, not clicks. Learn more'. This is only available if your account is eligible based on the requirements above.
  3. I've fulfilled all of the above requirements for using Smart Display campaigns with Pay for conversions, but I don't see an option in Google Ads
    • Your account may be ineligible for this feature. Eligibility is determined by a multitude of factors, which can change daily.

*Tip: If your account has more than 50 conversions in the last 30 days, you're eligible for a full SDC campaign instead.
