About automated rules in the previous and new Google Ads experience

In general, the changes you make in the previous AdWords experience are reflected in the new Google Ads experience. However, certain advertisers will see changes to their automated rules.

This article goes over the changes to automated rules in the new Google Ads experience.

What's changing

The rules you've set up in the previous AdWords experience will be automatically migrated to the new Google Ads experience to allow you to manage them fully in the new experience. However, certain rules and column values will retired and no longer supported in the new experience. Learn more about column changes in the new Google Ads experience

Rules that use columns or column values that aren't supported in the new experience will stop working and will be marked as invalid. Any user-defined custom columns that reference retired columns will also not be supported in the new Google Ads experience. Rules that use such custom columns in their criteria will also be marked as invalid

After your rules are migrated, you'll no longer be able to edit or create rules in the previous AdWords experience.

When rule migration is in progress for your customer ID, rule editing will be unavailable for up to a few hours. Rules execution won't be impacted at any time - they'll continue to run at scheduled times.

What you need to do

Note: The instructions below are part of the new design for the Google Ads user experience. To use the previous design, click the "Appearance" icon, and select Use previous design. If you're using the previous version of Google Ads, review the Quick reference map or use the Search bar in the top navigation panel of Google Ads to find the page you’re searching for.

You'll need to update any invalid rules in order to restore their functionality. This can be done by changing the rule criteria to use columns supported in the new Google Ads experience.

To fix rules that are marked invalid in the new Google Ads experience:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Tools icon Tools Icon.
  2. Click the Bulk actions drop down in the section menu, then click Rules.
  3. Apply a filter on the table for "Rule validity = Invalid". Learn more about customizing tables
  4. For the rules that are marked invalid, click "Fix" in the last column. You'll see the reason why the rule is marked invalid at the top of the page.

Note: Once rules move to the new Google Ads experience, behavior is expected to change for the specific cases listed below:

  • In the new Google Ads experience, rules will also affect trial campaign, ad groups, and other trial entities that are created for running campaign experiments.
  • In the new Google Ads experience, Search lost IS (rank) is available for ad groups belonging to budget constrained campaigns, (unavailable in the previous AdWords experience). As a result, ad group level rules using Search lost IS (rank) column will now also affect budget constrained ad groups in the new Google Ads experience.
