Create and edit notes

This article shows you how to create and edit notes and how to review the history of notes. Anyone with account access can add, edit, or remove notes on your Google Ads campaign or ad group pages.

Create notes

There are several ways to create notes, depending on where you are in Google Ads. Read below to learn about the different ways to create notes.

Via the performance graph

Note: The instructions below are part of the new design for the Google Ads user experience. To use the previous design, click the "Appearance" icon, and select Use previous design. If you're using the previous version of Google Ads, review the Quick reference map or use the Search bar in the top navigation panel of Google Ads to find the page you’re searching for.

The first and easiest way to create a note is to hover over a node on a performance graph and add a note from the information card that appears.

To create campaign notes:

Note: If you prefer to use the navigation panel on the left, click Change view in the top left of your Google Ads account.
  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click Overview.
  3. Use the date selector at the top ride side to select a date range of data you’d like to view.
  4. Hover over a circular node on the performance graph at the top of the page. Square nodes indicate existing notes, which you can edit.
  5. Click Add note. You can also click See all notes to view and edit any existing notes for this campaign or ad group.
    • Notes are added to the campaign that you’re viewing when creating the note. If you haven’t selected a specific campaign in the Views bar at the top, your note is added at your Google Ads account level.
  6. Type the content of your note in “Enter your note”.
  7. Click Save.

To create ad group notes:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu.
  3. Click Ad groups.
  4. Use the date selector at the top right side above the performance graph to select a date range of data you’d like to view.
  5. Hover over a circular node on the performance graph at the top of the page. Square nodes indicate existing notes, which you can edit.
  6. Click Add note. You can also click See all notes to view and edit any existing notes for this ad group.
    • Notes are added to the ad group that you’re viewing when creating the note. If you haven’t selected a specific ad group in the Views bar at the top, your note is added at your Google Ads account level.
  7. Type the content of your note in “Enter your note”.
  8. Click Save.

Via the notes panel

Note: The instructions below are part of the new design for the Google Ads user experience. To use the previous design, click the "Appearance" icon, and select Use previous design. If you're using the previous version of Google Ads, review the Quick reference map or use the Search bar in the top navigation panel of Google Ads to find the page you’re searching for.

The second way allows you to add a note to any date, without having to select a specific point on the performance graph first. With this method, you’re also able to review all existing notes in the notes panel.

To create campaign notes:

Note: If you prefer to use the navigation panel on the left, click Change view in the top left of your Google Ads account.
  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu, then click Campaigns.
  3. Click the 3-dot icon above the table of results.
  4. Click Open notes panel. You’ll have a list of all existing notes below.
  5. Click Add.
    • Notes are added to the campaign that you’re viewing when creating the note. If you haven’t selected a specific campaign from the Views bar at the top, your note is added at your Google Ads account level.
  6. Select a date.
  7. Type the content of your note in “Enter your note”.
  8. Click Save.

To create ad group notes:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu.
  3. Click Ad groups.
  4. Click the 3-dot icon above the table of results.
  5. Click Open notes panel. You’ll find a list of all existing notes below.
  6. Click Add.
    • Notes are added to the ad group that you’re viewing when creating the note. If you haven’t selected a specific ad group from the Views bar at the top, your note is added at your Google Ads account level.
  7. Select a date.
  8. Type the content of your note in “Enter your note”.
  9. Click Save.

Via the report table

To create campaign notes:

Note: If you prefer to use the navigation panel on the left, click Change view in the top left of your Google Ads account.
  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu, then click Campaigns.
  3. Select campaigns from the list by clicking the check box Blue check box icon for selecting ad campaigns to the left. A blue menu bar will appear above the list.
  4. Click Add note.
    • The note will only be added to the selected campaigns.
  5. Select a date.
  6. Type the note in the box below the date.
  7. Click Save.

To create ad group notes:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu.
  3. Click Ad groups.
  4. Select ad groups from the list by clicking the check boxBlue check box icon for selecting ad campaigns to the left. A blue menu bar will appear above the list.
  5. Click Add note.
    • The note will only be added to the selected ad groups.
  6. Select a date.
  7. Type the note in the box below the date.

Click Save.

Edit notes

You can edit any existing note via the notes panel, or directly on the performance graph. There are two ways to find an existing note:

To edit campaign notes:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu, then click Campaigns.
  3. Hover over a square node on the performance graph to edit a note. You'll find all notes for a specific date on a single hover card.
  4. Click See all notes to open the notes pane.
  5. Scroll up or down to find the note you want to edit.
  6. Click the pencil iconEdit setting, pencil icon to edit a note.
  7. Enter your content.
  8. Click Save.

To edit ad group notes:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu.
  3. Click Ad groups.
  4. Hover over a square node on the performance graph to edit a note. You’ll find all notes for a specific date on a single hover card.
  5. Click See all notes to open the notes panel.
  6. Scroll up or down to find the note you want to edit.
  7. Click the pencil iconEdit setting, pencil icon to edit a note.
  8. Enter your content.
  9. Click Save.

To edit campaign notes:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu, then click Campaigns.
  3. Click the 3-dot icon just below the performance graph on the left.
  4. Click Open notes panel. You’ll find a list of all existing notes below.
  5. Scroll down to find the note you want to edit.
  6. Click the pencil iconEdit setting, pencil icon to edit a note, or click the trash icon to delete it.
  7. Enter your content.
  8. Click Save.

To edit ad group notes:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu.
  3. Click Ad groups.
  4. Click the 3-dot icon just below the performance graph on the left.
  5. Click Open notes panel. You’ll find a list of all existing notes below.
  6. Scroll down to find the note you want to edit.
  7. Click the pencil iconEdit setting, pencil icon to edit a note, or click the trash icon to delete it.
  8. Enter your content.
  9. Click Save.

Review note history

You can review when notes were created or last edited, and by whom.

To review campaign notes:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu, then click Campaigns.
  3. Hover over a square node on the performance graph to open a note, or click the 3-dot icon below the performance graph, then click Open notes panel to review all notes.
    • At the bottom of any note, you can review when it was created or last edited. This information is also available in “Change history".

To review ad group notes:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Campaigns icon Campaigns Icon.
  2. Click the Campaigns drop down in the section menu.
  3. Click Ad groups.
  4. Hover over a square node on the performance graph to open a note, or click the 3-dot icon below the performance graph, then click Open notes panel to review all notes.
    • At the bottom of any note, you can review when it was created or last edited. This information is also available in “Change history”.
