Voluntary Safety Recall of Ionic Smartwatches

CONSUMER NOTICE

Fitbit, in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced a voluntary recall of Fitbit Ionic smartwatches, which the company introduced in 2017 and stopped producing in 2020. The battery in the Ionic smartwatch can overheat, posing a burn hazard.

The health and safety of Fitbit users is our highest priority. We are taking this action out of an abundance of caution for our users. We will offer a refund to Fitbit Ionic customers.

This voluntary recall is specific to Fitbit Ionic devices. It does not impact any other Fitbit smartwatches or trackers.

If you own a Fitbit Ionic, please stop using your device.

How do I get a refund?

To apply for your refund, visit our refund registration page to begin the refund process. After you complete the registration process, you’ll get your refund in 3-6 weeks. If you're required to return your Ionic to us, you'll receive your refund 3-6 weeks after we receive it.

Why did you do a recall?

After a thorough investigation, we determined that in very limited instances, the battery in the Ionic smartwatch can overheat, posing a burn hazard. Your safety is always our top priority, and we are taking this action out of an abundance of caution. We’re offering a refund to Fitbit Ionic customers.

My Ionic is working normally. Do I need to stop using it?

You should stop using your Ionic. We stopped producing Ionic in 2020 and aren’t offering replacement Ionic devices as part of this recall. For further information on how to receive a refund, visit our refund registration page.

I haven’t had any issues with my Ionic. Can I take it on a plane or put it in my checked luggage?

No. The FAA prohibits carrying any recalled lithium ion batteries on an aircraft. Please see the FAA’s PackSafe for Passengers webpage for more information. 

I don’t have an Ionic, but am wearing a different Fitbit device. Is my Fitbit device safe to wear?

This recall does not affect any other Fitbit smartwatches or trackers.

How do I know if I have Fitbit Ionic?

See the image below to help you identify Ionic. Ionic has 3 buttons and a colored LCD.

You can find the model number FB503 on the back of Ionic, under the “CE” mark and above the clasp.

To see which device is connected to your Fitbit account:

  1. Tap the Today tab , and tap your profile picture.
  2. On the Account page, review the devices connected to your account.

How do I erase my personal information from my watch?

What happens to my Fitbit data if I consent to disabling syncing for my device?

How do I dispose of my Ionic if I can't return it?

What’s the difference between skin irritation and this issue?

Despite all our efforts, a small number of people may experience a reaction to certain materials. This reaction is typically due to eczema, allergies, or other skin sensitivities, which can become worse when irritants like sweat or soap get trapped beneath the band and irritate the skin. This recall is not related to skin irritation. If you have a Fitbit device and are experiencing skin irritation, review our Wear & Care instructions.
