Choose to display subtitles if a show or movie on a channel you're watching has closed captioning capability
This article applies to customers who have the new version of Fiber TV. If you have the older version of our user interface, please view this article on how to turn closed captions on or off.

TV programming captions are provided by each content provider. Google Fiber simply passes them through unchanged. If you have an issue with closed captions with your Fiber service, let us know and we'll work to address the problem.

Select a closed captions channel

If you turn on closed captions, it appears for any show that provides them. For better readability, you can change the format of closed captions, such as their size, color, and background. Google Fiber TV provides access to these caption channels: CC1 (used by most programming in the US), CC2, CC3, CC4, DTVCC1, DTVCC2, DTVCC3 and DTVCC4.

  1. While watching TV, press on the remote control to display the Info bar.

  2. More info is automatically selected. Press the down button  on the remote to show more options on the Info bar.

  3. Select Closed Captions and press the ok Google Fiber TV remote ok button button.

Change the subtitle options on Google Fiber TV.

  4. Press the down button , select a caption channel (CC1 is used by most programming in the US) and press ok

Format closed captions options to Google Fiber TV.

The Info bar disappears in a few seconds. Or, you can press on the remote to clear the bar.

Try selecting each of the other caption channels (CC2, CC3, CC4, DTVCC1, DTVCC2, DTVCC3 or DTVCC4) if subtitles don't appear. If after selecting each of the caption channels doesn't show subtitles, then it's likely that the content provider doesn't allow this option.

Frequently asked questions about closed captions

What are closed captions?

Closed captions are the text version of a show’s audio and appear as subtitles on your TV's screen. They describe dialogue and other sounds, such as sound effects and music cues, and identify the speakers. Captions were originally created to aid the hearing impaired, but they’re also useful for viewing television in noisy environments or when the sound is muted. They can also serve as a tool for learning English as a second language.

Are closed captions available for every show?

Captions are provided by content providers, and they might not be available for all content. Google Fiber TV simply passes them through unchanged.

What do I do if I have a problem with closed captions?

If you have problems with closed captions, contact Google Fiber.
