About sports blackouts

A sports blackout occurs when a sporting event scheduled for live broadcast is not permitted to be aired in a particular media market. Sports blackouts are typically the result of contractual agreements between the content owners (sports leagues) and programming distributors (broadcast networks and cable stations) that determine the rights to air a live event in a particular market. Each sports league establishes its own blackout rules for live sporting events in specific markets.
