Train universal remotes

At this time, only the Logitech Harmony remote has a complete code set for the Google Fiber TV Box. Many other universal remotes can be "trained" to work with Google Fiber TV using the IR learning method, which is often explained in the manufacturer's documentation.

If you already have a different universal remote and want to use it with Google Fiber TV, it is definitely worth trying to program it using the IR learning method. This programming procedure is for advanced users, so be sure you're comfortable with all the steps before you begin.

You must turn off Bluetooth® mode on your Google Fiber remote control before beginning this procedure. This is different than unpairing the Bluetooth remote. Unpairing simply disassociates the remote from the device it was paired with. Turning off Bluetooth actually disables the Bluetooth function altogether. Be sure to re-enable Bluetooth on the Google Fiber remote when you are done, so you can continue using it as a Bluetooth remote.

Step 1. Disable Bluetooth on the Google Fiber remote:

  • Press and hold both  and 8 for three seconds. The  tv button flashes twice.

  • Press and hold both  and  tv box for three seconds. The  tv box button flashes twice.

Step 2. Program your universal remote by IR learning:

  • Follow your universal remote manufacturer's instructions to train their remote using the IR method.

Step 3. Confirm that IR learning worked by using the universal remote to:

  • Turn the TV Box on and off.

  • Change the channel.

  • Display the main menu.

If these keys do not work, repeat step 2 and then check again.

Step 4. Re-enable Bluetooth on the Google Fiber remote:

  • Press and hold both  and 5 for three seconds. The  tv button flashes once.

  • Point the Bluetooth remote at the TV Box, and press any key (except tv and input).

Step 5. Confirm that Bluetooth is re-enabled by using the Google Fiber remote to (while NOT pointing it at the TV Box):

  • Turn the TV Box on and off.

  • Change the channel.

  • Display the main menu.

If these keys do not work, see the instructions to pair the remote with a TV Box.
