After you schedule a recording, you can set any of the recording options described below.
A first run show is a show whose original air date was within the last 28 days but has not been recorded before. There are a few reasons why we consider a show as "first run" even though it is not airing for the first time today:
-
Some channels replay the same program multiple times throughout the week, but others do not. So, for example, the episode of Show A that airs on Monday is the same as the one that airs on Sunday, and both are considered a first run. Due to scheduling conflicts, the DVR might record Show A on Monday, so it can record Show B on Sunday, because Show B airs only once that week—on Sunday at the same time as Show A. That way, you get both recordings and do not miss either show.
-
There might be power outages, service outages, equipment issues, or other reasons why a scheduled recording cannot be performed. So giving the DVR some options on the definition of a first run reduces the possibility of missing some recordings due to these issues.
-
Programming is sometimes pre-empted for various reasons (such as a sporting event runs long, a news announcement about something important, and so on). In this case, programming can get shifted out as far as a couple weeks at times.
If your Google Fiber TV service was installed within the last 28 days, selecting First Run Only might record an episode you already watched with your previous service. After you have been with Google Fiber for 28 days, this should no longer be an issue.
Function | Options | More Information |
---|---|---|
Series Options | First Runs Only First Runs & Reruns Reruns Only |
Select First Runs Only to record new shows the first time they air. Select First Runs & Reruns to record all episodes. Select Reruns Only if you want to record all episodes except new episodes the first time they air. |
Saving Options | Delete When Full Keep Forever |
Select Delete When Full for shows that are a lower priority for you, since they will be deleted, if necessary, to make space for new recordings. Important: Use the Keep Forever setting selectively. If you mark all or most of your recordings Keep Forever, the storage device fills up very quickly. When the storage device is full, live TV will not be able to play until you manually delete some recordings. This is because live TV is being recorded so that you can pause and rewind. |
Save Up To | Unlimited 1 Recording 2 Recordings 3 Recordings 4 Recordings 5 Recordings 10 Recordings 15 Recordings 20 Recordings |
Select the maximum number of episodes you want to record. When your recordings of this show reach the number you set here:
|
Start Recording | 2 hours early 1 hour early 30 minutes early 15 minutes early 10 minutes early 5 minutes early On Time 5 minutes late 10 minutes late 15 minutes late 30 minutes late 1 hour late 2 hours late |
If you know that sometimes a show starts early or late, you can add or delete some recording time with this setting. However, this setting could create a conflict with the recordings of other shows just before this show. Also, if you set the recording to begin before the show is scheduled to start (pre-padding), when you play the recording, it begins at the start of the show, not the beginning of the pre-padding. You can, however, rewind to see the pre-padding that was recorded. |
End Recording | 2 hours early 1 hour early 30 minutes early 15 minutes early 10 minutes early 5 minutes early On Time 5 minutes late 10 minutes late 15 minutes late 30 minutes late 1 hour late 2 hours late |
Generally, the default setting, On Time, works best. If you know that sometimes the show ends early or late, you can add or delete some recording time with this setting. However, this recording time could affect the recordings of other shows just after this show. |

Limit to Channels | All Channels Any Channel |
If you want to limit a Smart Recording to occur only on specific channels, select All Channels, and then select the channels you want to record. If you do not care which channels you record, accept the default setting, Any Channel. |
