Understand how the T-Mobile 3G shutdown affects your service

In July 2022, T-Mobile will start to turn off their 3G network. As a result, some devices that don’t support Voice over LTE (VoLTE) or VoLTE roaming may lose voice calling services, including calls to 911, or connectivity when the 3G networks are shut down.

For the latest information on the 3G phase out, visit the FCC website

You can also learn more about the shutdown on the T-Mobile site.

If you’re a Google Fi user on an older device where VoLTE was not enabled, you will experience issues on your home network and we recommend you upgrade to a device that has VoLTE enabled.

Service on Non-VoLTE phones

If you are on a non-VoLTE  phone, you are affected by the T-Mobile 3G shut down. If you’re not sure if your phone is compatible, you can check the Google Fi compatibility checker.

When T-Mobile’s 3G network is phased out, you will no longer be able to use your device for voice calling, including emergency calling, and will have minimal connectivity. You can still use Wi-FI for voice calls.

We recommend that you upgrade your phone to have the best service. If you expect to be impacted by the T-Mobile 3G shutdown, contact Google Fi support with any questions. You may also receive an email from Google Fi with additional info.

Service if you often connect to a 3G network.

If you primarily connect to a 3G network, your coverage will be affected by this shut down. You can check a coverage map

You can still use Wi-Fi for voice calls, and your coverage on 4G and 5G networks will stay the same.

Service on Pixel 1 and Pixel 2

If you use a Pixel 1 or 2 you are affected by the 3G network shut down. On your current phone, you will not have connectivity when roaming domestically, and your phone will not get the software update to enable VoLTE roaming.

We recommend that you upgrade to a phone with VoLTE enabled or a device that can be upgraded to be compatible.

Pixel 3 and up users

If you use a Pixel 3, you may have reduced ability to make phone calls while roaming.

In June 2022, Google released a software update that enabled VoLTE roaming for many U.S. and global carriers. This allows many Pixel devices to roam in the U.S. with VoLTE, if your carrier supports VoLTE roaming. Contact your carrier for more information.

The software update is available for the following Pixel devices, if applicable for your carrier:

  • Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL
  • Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL
  • Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL
  • Pixel 4a
  • Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5
  • Pixel 5a (5G)
  • Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro

Android 13

  • Pixel 6a and later
