Find & manage your child's Android device location

You can choose your child's location settings. If certain location settings are turned on, you can see your child's Android device location in the Family Link app.

See where your child's Android device is

If you're a parent, you can see your child's Android device location in the Family Link app.

  1. Open the Family Link app Family Link.
  2. Select your child.
  3. On the "Location" card, tap Set Up.
  4. Turn on the settings required to see your child's location.
  5. Tap Turn on. It might take up to 30 minutes to see your child's device location.

Change your child's location settings

Note: Both settings below need to be turned on to see your child's Android device location in the Family Link app.

"See your child's location" setting
  1. Open the Family Link app Family Link.
  2. Select your child.
  3. Tap Manage Settings and then Location.
  4. Turn See your child's location on or off.
Device location settings
  1. Open the Family Link app Family Link.
  2. Select your child.
  3. On the "Settings" card, tap Manage and then Location.
  4. On the card with their device's name, tap Settings and then Location settings.
  5. Turn Device location or or off.
  6. If you turned Device location on, select the location mode. Your child's device needs to be set to "High accuracy" for you to see its location in Family Link.

Note: You can also manage this setting by clicking on your child's name at families.google.com.

Location History

Note: Location History is only available for children 13 and over (or the applicable age in your country).

  1. Open the Family Link app Family Link.
  2. Select your child.
  3. Tap Manage Settings and then More and then Manage Google activity and then Manage Activity Controls
    • You may need to sign in to your Google Account.
  4. Scroll down and turn Location History on or off.

Troubleshoot problems

I can't see my child's location

Location works best if your child's device has a cellular data plan.

You won’t see your child's location in the Family Link app if:

  • Their device is powered off
  • Their device isn't connected to the Internet
  • The device hasn't been used recently 

If you can't see your child's location in the Family Link app:

  1. Follow the steps above to turn on the "See your child's location" and "Device location" settings.
  2. After you turn the settings on, it might take up to 30 minutes for your child's location to update.
My child’s device location is wrong

Step 1: Try these common fixes

  1. Make sure the device is connected to the Internet.
  2. Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on.
  3. Restart the phone.

Step 2: Calibrate the device

If your child's location is still wrong, try calibrating the phone's compass.

My child has more than one device, but I only see their location for one of them

You'll only see the device location for whichever device was used more recently.
