Manage guardians in your domain

This article is for Google Workspace Administrators. Teachers go here.

Guardians can get email summaries of their student’s work and progress in a class. For Edu Plus SKUs, guardians can also get preview capabilities of their student’s work within Classroom.

As the Google Workspace administrator, you can:

  • Allow guardian features for your school or district.
  • Give teachers permission to invite or remove guardians.

Guardians who sign up for email summaries can’t see the Stream, Classwork, People, or Grades pages in Classroom.

Turn guardian features on or off

By default, guardian access is turned on for K–12 schools. Guardian access is turned off for higher education institutions.

When access is turned on, guardians are linked to their student and can:

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, choose an option:
    • If you’re using Google Workspace for Education or Workspace for Nonprofits, click Apps and then Google Workspace and then Classroom.
    • If you’re using Workspace Basic, Business, or Google Workspace for Education Plus, click Apps and then Additional Google services and thenClassroom.
  3. Click General settings.
  4. Under Guardian access, click Allow parents and guardians to access Classroom information.

Tip: If students in domains on the allow list join your classes, those domains must turn on guardian features so teachers can invite the student’s guardians. Learn how to configure class settings.
