Grade and return question answers

Before you start grading questions, you can see the status of student work.

You can return grades to one or more students at a time. For ungraded questions, you can give personalized feedback. 

You can download grades for a single question or for all work in a class.

See work status and student answers
  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork. 
  3. Click the questionand thenView question.
  4. On the Student answers page, you can see the number and names of students grouped by work status:
    • Assigned—Work that students have to turn in, including missing or unsubmitted work
    • Turned in—Work that students turned in
    • Graded—Graded work you returned 
    • Returned—Ungraded work you returned
  5. To see a student's answer, at the left, click a student's name.
  6. (Optional) To sort students, choose an option:
    • To see students with the same work status, at the center, click Assigned, Turned inGraded, or Returned.
    • To sort the list of students at the left, above the list, click the Down arrow  and select an option.
    • For multiple-choice questions, to see the students that chose an option, click the option. 
  7. (Optional) To see the student's grade and submission history, in the center, click See history.
  8. (Optional) To send the student a private comment, at the bottom, click Add private commentand thenenter your commentand thenclick Post .
  9. (Optional) For short-answer questions, to reply to the student, click Reply and thenenter your replyand thenclick Post .
    Note: All students can see your reply.
  10. (Optional) To return to the summary view of all students, at the right, click Close 
Enter and return a grade

When you enter a grade, it saves as a draft. You can return one grade at a time, or all grades together during another session. When you return grades, students get a notification and can see their grade.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork.
  3. Click the questionand thenView question.
  4. (Optional) To change the question's point value, at the top, click the Down arrow and thenenter a new value or select Ungradedand thenclick Update.
  5. On the left, next to a student's name, click Add gradeand thenenter a grade.
    The grade saves as a draft.

    Note: For decimal grades, Classroom supports 2 digits after the decimal point. If you enter more than 2 digits, the grade is rounded to the nearest 2-digit decimal form. For example, if you enter 88.725, it’s rounded to 88.73.

  6. To return grades, next to a student's name, check the boxand thenclick Return and confirm.
    Note: You can check multiple boxes or the box for All students

Change a grade

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork.
  3. Click the questionand thenView question.
  4. Click the grade you want to changeand thenenter the new grade.
    The grade saves as a draft.
  5. (Optional) To return the new grade, next to the student’s name, check the boxand thenclick Return and confirm.

Comment on ungraded questions

You can give students feedback when they answer an ungraded question. You can leave comments for individual students or the entire class. Based on the question type and your settings in the question, students can respond in different ways.

Short-answer questions

For short-answer questions, you can add class comments, private comments, or individual replies that all students can see and respond to. 

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork.
  3. Click the questionand thenView question.
  4. On the Student answers page, at the left, click a student's name.
  5. Choose an option:
    • To reply to the student’s answer so the entire class can see and respond, click Reply .

      Note: You can only reply to students who left answers. If you don't see Reply under a student's answer, edit the question and select Students can reply to each other.
    • To leave a private comment for the student, at the bottom, click Add private comment.
    • To leave a class comment, at the top, click Questionand thenAdd class comment.
  6. Enter your reply or commentand thenclick Post 

Multiple-choice questions 

For multiple-choice questions, you can add class comments or private comments. 

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork
  3. Click the questionand thenView question.
  4. On the Student answers page, at the left, click a student's name.
  5. Choose an option:
    • To add a private comment, click Add private comment.
    • To add a class comment, at the top, click Questionand thenAdd class comment.
  6. Enter your commentand thenclick Post .
Download grades

You can download grades from Classroom to Google Sheets or to a comma-separated values (CSV) file. Only returned grades show in your downloaded file.

Download grades to Sheets

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork.
  3. Click the questionand thenView question.
  4. In the top-right corner, click Settings and thenCopy all grades to Google Sheets.

    The spreadsheet is created in your class Drive folder. 

Download grades to a CSV file

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork.
  3. Click the questionand thenView question.
  4. In the top-right corner, click Settings and thenchoose an option:
    • To download grades for this question only, select Download these grades as CSV.
    • To download all grades for the class, select Download all grades as CSV

    The file automatically saves to your computer's Downloads folder.
