I’m an instructor. How do I link my Google Account to Assignments?
I’m a student. How do I link my Google Account to Assignments?
I’m an instructor, and I couldn’t sign in to Assignments with my Google Account

You might be trying to sign in with a personal email account.

For both Assignments and Assignments LTI, check that you're using your G Suite for Education account given to you by your institution.

Create assignments

I received an error that my assignment wasn’t set up properly

The first time you use Assignments LTI in a course, you must link your Google Account to the LMS. For more information, go to Set up Assignments LTI for classwork.

I accidentally deleted a student assignment while grading

In both Assignments and Assignments LTI, if you accidentally deleted a student’s assignment, you can restore it from your Google Drive Trash folder. For more information, go to Find or recover a file.

If you emptied your Trash folder and can’t find the file, ask your G Suite for Education admin to restore the assignment.

If your admin is unable to restore the assignment, ask your student to unsubmit their assignment, then resubmit the backup copy in their Google Drive Assignments folder.

Assignments LTI installation

I received the error "Contact your system administrator"

Reload the page. If reloading doesn’t work, most likely:

  • You have an invalid key or secret. The key or secret used to install Assignments LTI is incorrect. In your LMS, update the key and/or secret.
  • Your privacy settings are misconfigured.  Assignments LTI needs your name and email address. Common fixes include:
    • Canvas: In the Assignments LTI app configuration, set Privacy to Public.
    • Blackboard:  In LTI Tool Provider settings, under Institution Policies select user role, name, and email data.
    • Other LMSs: Check that the user has an email address.
  • Your LMS isn’t set up to receive grades from Assignments LTI. Assignments LTI isn't receiving an LTI outcomes service URL. Your LMS might not support this service. Or, the installation was misconfigured and doesn’t allow permission for Assignments LTI to update grades. Common fixes include:
    • Update the LTI secret: For instructions, go to Set up Assignments LTI in your LMS.
    • Blackboard: Turn on grading for Assignments LTI and in the global LTI settings.
    • Other LMSs: Check that LTI apps have permission to update grades. For information on how to check if your LTI apps are set up correctly for your LMS, go to your LMS help center.
  • Your LMS isn’t using HTTPS. The LMS must be set up to accept more secure connections.
  • You’re not an instructor. Only instructors can embed Google Drive files into assignments.
If I have multiple domains for students and instructors, do they all have to be registered with Assignments LTI to work?

No. For Assignments LTI to work in institutions with multiple domains, only the instructor domain must be registered with Assignments LTI.

If both student and instructor domains are managed under the same G Suite license, no configuration is needed. However, if the domains are managed under different G Suite licenses, the student domain needs to be set up to be trusted by the instructor domain. Your G Suite Administrator can Whitelist trusted G Suite domains

For more information on setting up Assignments LTI, go to Create classwork with Assignments LTI.

I want to update the LTI secret

If you need to update your LTI secret, you can generate a new secret in the Assignments admin console. For more information, go to Set up Assignments LTI in your LMS.

Important: After updating the LTI secret, update the Assignments LTI configuration in your LMS. Existing courses and assignments can’t send grades back to the LMS until the LTI secret is updated.

Assignments LTI Grading

The final grade didn’t pass back to my LMS

Grade passback can be unsuccessful if:

  • Your LMS admin misconfigured the LMS to not allow grade passback.
  • Your LMS is behind a firewall that blocks grade passback requests from Assignments LTI.
Grade passback isn’t working in Moodle

If the instructor created a standard Moodle assignment without Assignments LTI, they must manually recreate the assignment as an External Tool.

For Moodle Administrators:

  • Assignments LTI requires HTTPS. Check the Moodle's config.php and make sure "$CFG->wwwroot" begins with "https". This change should be tested thoroughly before turning it on in your production Moodle environment.
  • When adding an external tool in Moodle, the LMS admin has to give permissions for the tool to post grades back to Moodle. Under Privacy, check the Accept grades from the tool box.
