Manage your maps in Google Drive

You can see all your My Maps in Google Drive, both those you created and those shared with you. Use Drive's features to manage your maps along with your Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

Create or open a map

To create a map in Google Drive:

  1. Make sure you're signed in to your Google Account.
  2. Open Google Drive.
  3. Click New and then More and then Google My Maps.

To open a map you’ve already created in My Maps:

  1. Open Google Drive.
  2. Click My Drive.
  3. Double click the map you want to open.

To delete a map in Google Drive:

  1. Open Google Drive.
  2. Find your map and click it once.
  3. In the top right, click Remove Remove.

If you delete a map, it’s moved to the Trash folder in Drive, where you can permanently delete it or restore it later. Your map will still appear in My Maps until you permanently delete it from the Trash.

Share a map

From Google Drive, you can set sharing options for your maps. Any changes you make to sharing settings in Drive are automatically reflected in My Maps.

  1. Open Google Drive.
  2. Find your map and click it once.
  3. In the toolbar at the top of the page, click Share Share.
  4. Type the email addresses of the people you want to share with in the text box below "Invite people." You can add a single person, a mailing list, or choose from your contacts.
  5. Choose the access level from the drop-down menu: Can view or Can edit. (You'll also see the Can comment option; for maps, this option works just like Can view.)
Change a map's title or description

If you change a map’s title or description in Google Drive, those changes are automatically reflected in My Maps, and vice versa.

  1. Open Google Drive.
  2. Find your map and click it once.
  3. To change the title, click More actions More. Then choose Rename.
  4. To change the description, click More actions More. Then choose View details.
Organize your maps

Use Google Drive to keep your maps organized and easy to find. For example, you could put all of your vacation maps in one folder. If you've created many maps and want to open a specific map quickly, just enter any text in the map’s title in the search box.

Delete a map

If you delete a map from My Maps or from Google Drive, it’s moved to the Trash folder in Drive.  To permanently delete (or restore) a trashed map, open Google Drive and locate the map in the Trash folder.

Important notes about maps in Drive
  • Storage: As with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, your maps don’t use any of your storage quota for Google Drive.
  • Offline sync: Your maps are available only in Google Drive on the web. You can’t get to them offline.
