Use Google Drive with an iPad or iPhone

Using the Google Drive app for iOS, you can back up files, create new documents, share your work, and organize things into folders.

Upload or edit files

Upload files to Drive

Save documents, presentations, photos, and videos from your iPhone or iPad to Google Drive.

Using the Drive app

  1. Open the Drive app .
  2. At the bottom right, touch the + button.
  3. Select Upload.
  4. Select the file type or app you want to upload from.
    • To add an app to the list, touch More > turn the switch on > Done.
  5. Select the items you want to upload.
  6. At the top right, touch the checkmark icon .

Using a different app

  1. Open the app you want to upload from (for example, the Apple Photos app).
  2. Touch the share icon.
  3. Choose Google Drive from the list of apps.
    (If you don't see it, touch More to add it.)
  4. At the top right, touch Upload.
    • To put your file in a specific folder, touch the folder icon > select a folder. 
    • To share your file, touch the lock icon > add people.
Edit files saved in Drive

Using Docs, Sheets, or Slides

All changes using Docs, Sheets, & Slides will automatically sync with Drive. Learn how to create a new document, spreadsheet, or presentation.

Using other apps

You can use some apps, like Microsoft Word, to open and edit files saved in Drive. Your changes will sync back to Drive without having to leave the other app.

  1. Using the non-Google app, touch Open.
  2. Touch ...More.
  3. At the top left, touch Locations > Google Drive. 
    (If you don't see it, touch More and turn the "Google Drive" switch on.)
  4. Choose a Google Account.
  5. Touch the file you want to open or edit.

Share files

Share or collaborate on files or folders

You can share documents and folders with people and choose what level of access they have, like view-only, commenting, or editing.

  1. Open the Drive app .
  2. To the right of the item's title, touch the "more" icon .
  3. Touch Add people.
  4. Type the email addresses of the people you want to share with.
  5. Select Can edit or Can comment, depending on the level of access you want them to have.
    Note: If you're sharing a folder, you won't see the "Can comment" option.
Send someone a file or folder

You can share documents and folders with people and give them view-only access.

  1. Open the Drive app .
  2. To the right of the item's title, touch the "more" icon .
  3. Touch Add people.
  4. Type the person's email address and select Can view to prevent them from making changes to the file or folder.

Move, delete, or rename things

Move things into a different folder
  1. Open the Drive app .
  2. Multiple items:
    - Touch and hold an item to select it, then touch icons on other items to select them.
    - At the bottom, drag the stack of items into a folder.
    One item:
    Touch the "more" icon > Move.
Delete items
  1. Open the Drive app .
  2. Multiple items:
    - Touch and hold an item to select it, then touch the icon on other items to select them.
    - On the stack at the bottom, touch the trash icon .
    One item:
    To the right of the item's title, touch the "more" icon  then select Remove.
Rename an item
  1. Open the Drive app .
  2. To the right of the item's title, touch the "more" icon .
  3. Select Rename.

Frequently asked questions

Which types of files can I view in Drive?

The Drive app works with the following file types:

  • Google documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and drawings
  • All Microsoft Office formats
  • TXT and PDF files
  • Images (JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, TIF)
  • Movies (MOV, AVI, MP4)

To view a file type that doesn't work with Drive, you'll need to open it using a different app.
