Subdomain forwarding

Subdomain forwarding directs a subdomain of your domain to an existing URL.

To create a subdomain and forward it to a URL:

  1. Click My domains on the left and then click the domain name.
  2. Click the DNS tab .
  3. Scroll down to Synthetic Records.
  4. Select Subdomain forward from the list of synthetic record types.
  5. Add a synthetic record:
    TYPE    Subdomain   Destination URL
Subdomain forward <the name of the a subdomain you are forwarding, www, or @ for the root domain.> <the address you are directing this subdomain to>
  6. Select the type of redirect. This determines how routers and browsers store your subdomain forwarding information. If you are unsure, use Temporary (302).
    • Temporary (HTTP 302) redirect allows you to propagate changes to your forwarding address quickly.
      • Browsers typically do not cache 302 redirects.
      • Can force a lookup to the routing table or DNS server for the redirect every time.
      • Changes you make to web forwarding propagate very quickly.
    • Permanent (HTTP 301) redirect allows browsers to cache the forwarding address.
      • This may help the address resolve slightly more quickly on subsequent visits from the same browser.
      • Changes may take longer to propagate.
  7. Choose whether to turn on path forwarding. If you are unsure, leave path forwarding off.

Path forwarding forwards the path after the domain name to the same path at the new address.

domain is to the left of the / path is to the right

For example, if you are forwarding example.documentationexample.com to example.com:
    • Path forwarding on: example.documentationexample.net/about.html redirects to example.com/about.html
    • Path forwarding off: example.documentationexample.net/about.html redirects to example.com
  8. Click Add and accept the changes to your resource record.

In a short time (a few seconds to a few minutes) your subdomain will lead directly to destination URL.

You can change or delete the record at any time by clicking Edit or Delete next to it in the list of synthetic records.

Note: To forward WWW and your root domain (also known as the "naked domain") , you can also use Web Forwarding. on the Website tab  .
