Hello,
You can always go to File > Make a copy and then the copy starts a new "version history".

When a copy of a Docs document or sheet is made, the owner has the option to share it with the same people, so that's not an issue with shared files.
Versions in Drive are not the same as version history within a document. Older changes in version history won't be removed when new changes are made to the document. When there are many changes or a document is very old, those versions may be combined within version history but they won't disappear or be removed. The only way to remove version history is to make a copy of the document or sheet.

Mchall, the help communities are managed by volunteer product users (this is a peer-to-peer message board), not Google employees. We can offer assistance with troubleshooting and how-to questions, but we have no control over product improvements or general issues/complaints.
You can submit your concerns via Help > Report a problem. The team reviews all feedback sent to them but is unable to respond to individual users. The more users who have this same request, the more likely the team will make a change.

My scenario:
1. I created a service proposal for client A some time ago.
2. I duplicated the service proposal for client B and I just wasn't thinking about the initial version (still with client A data) being kept in the history.
3. Now, I've been working on changes in the proposal for client B and I don't want client B to know anything about client A and additionally I don't want to lose the history of changes in the document from the time I started editing it.

I don't believe you can do that, Brian.

If I make a copy file in order to get rid of the many versions , which when
I go in to view changes seems to take forever, am I correct in thinking
there is no way to keep the same link?
This is not a large sheet with a few allowed to edit but a small sheet
with around 80 people who can edit. It would be a cause of concern
to many that the link suddenly did not work, and a big task to contact
all to advise the change.
I suppose a work round would be to change the first page to a message
on the original sheet with the new link.
Unless there has been a way found to simple delete the old versions from
the original. Thanks
