Create an image with Gemini in Google Docs (Workspace Labs)

Important: This article refers to Google Workspace Labs, which is a trusted tester program for users to try new AI features. To check if you have access to Workspace Labs features, open a document in Google Docs. At the top, click Insert and then Cover Image or Image and then Help me create an image . Learn where you can use Workspace Labs features.

This feature is available:

  • On desktop only.
  • To users on work or school accounts through a Gemini for Google Workspace add-on.
  • To users on personal accounts through Google One AI Premium.
  • Through our early access testing program, Get started with Google Workspace Labs.

To create images and cover images for your document with Gemini in Docs, you can use the "Help me create an image " option. For example, you can request Docs to create a “Joyful illustration of a desk with a laptop, coffee cup, and plants in front of a window with sunshine pouring in.”

Use Gemini to create an image

  1. On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Click the document where you want to add the image.
  3. At the top, click Insert and then Image and then Help me create an image .
  4. In the panel on the right, enter a prompt. For example:
    • "A beautiful photograph of a Hawaiian beach at sunset with palm trees in the distance"
    • "A plate of freshly baked blueberry muffins on a wooden kitchen table next to a large window"
    • "Watercolor painting of hydrangeas in a water pitcher"
    • "A futuristic cityscape with skyscrapers and flying cars set at night with HD details and shadows"

    Tips:

    • For better results, consider the subject, setting, distance to subject, materials, or background. For example: "A close up of a boat made out of wood on a lake surrounded by trees at sunrise."
    • Avoid figurative language in your prompt.
  5. Optional: To customize the image you create, click Add a style.
  6. To get several suggested images, click Create.
  7. Optional: After you click “Create,” you can:
    • Send feedback about the suggested image: Under each image, click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
    • Edit your prompt: At the top of the panel on the right, you can:
      1. Click the prompt.
      2. Edit your prompt.
      3. Click Create.
    • Find more suggested images: Click View more.
  8. To insert an image, click on it.

Use Gemini to create a cover image

This allows you to create a cover image in Docs

Important: Cover images are only available in Pageless mode. When you change your document to Pages mode, the cover image is hidden.

  1. On your computer, open a new document in Google Docs.
  2. To insert a cover image, you can either:
    • At the top, click Insert and then Cover Image and then Help me create an image .
    • In your document:
      1. Enter: @cover image.
      2. Click Cover image and then Help me create an image .
  3. In the panel on the right, enter a prompt.
    • For example, “A top-down view of a white desk with neatly arranged sticky notes, a pen, pencil, notebook, and potted plant.”
  4. Optional: To customize the image you create:
    1. Click Add a style.
    2. Select your preferred style.
  5. Click Create.
  6. Optional: After you generate an image, in the panel you can:
    • Send feedback about the suggested image: Under each image, click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
    • Edit your prompt: At the top right of the panel, you can:
      1. Click the prompt.
      2. Edit your prompt.
      3. Click Create.
    • Find more suggested images: Click View more.
  7. To insert an image, click on it.
  8. Optional: After you insert a cover image in your document, select the cover image to:
    • Replace image: Click Replace image .
    • Reposition: Click Reposition .
    • Find alt text: Click Alt text .
    • Delete: Click Delete Delete .

Give feedback on generated images

Gemini for Google Workspace constantly learns and may not be able to support your request.

If you get a suggestion that’s inaccurate or makes you feel unsafe, you can submit feedback to let us know. Your feedback can be used to enhance AI-assisted Workspace features and expand Google efforts in AI.

  1. On your computer, below the generated image, select Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
  2. In the pop-up window, select if you want to share outputs along with your feedback. If you don’t want to share it, you can uncheck it.
    • If you select Bad suggestion :
      1. To select the issue you found, select Next.
      2. Enter additional feedback.
  3. Click Submit.

To provide general feedback on this feature, at the top, click Help and then Help Docs improve.
